In search of the "Holy Grail"

Question for all.
What do you consider the "Holy Grail of Junkyard finds"? Mine used to be a Tach equipped Dash Cluster until I happened upon one in the corner of a little place I used to hunt in (the stars were in line that day).
Then it went to a tilt steering column til I found one on Ebay (I still look for them though). Now it's the stainles drip rail trim. I know any of these things can be bought aftermarket but it's just so satisfying when when you rub the mud off a window, or pop a hood open and you find .........
I will forever hunt the yards for stuff, because just buying new parts just doesn't have the same feeling of satifaction.

I have found the stainless you're looking for in El Paso last year. Didn't take it because it's not what I'm after. I'm still searching for tach or tilt though. Go figure.

The drip rail molding is not factory. Just something a company came out with to dress up your truck. WES

Re: In search of the "Holy Grail"

I've found lots of good stuff, but I'll tell you one thing that is elusive are those white canvas bags for the tire tools. I think most of them blew off on the side of the road in the 70's

Re: In search of the "Holy Grail"

How about a complete truck, always garaged, with all the cool options: 327, 4 speed in floor, AC, NO RUST, that the junkyard owner has the title for and for whatever reason, only wants $100.00 for. That would be nice.

Right now I'd like to find a set of doors or rear fenders to fit my 72 stepside, rust-free, with the cut out for the driver's side spare tire. That would be a very nice find.

Re: In search of the "Holy Grail"

I know tail gates are easy to come by, but i'm always amazed when one comes up that was a take off for a camper and stored in the attic for 40+ years and then sold at a yard sale for $50

Re: In search of the "Holy Grail"

Great comments, and I agree with every one of them (Didn't know that about the drip rail trim. Learn something new every day). I always get pyched up when I go into any yard, and then start looking in and under stuff for the things that other prospectors may have missed. "What cool item will I find today?" Can't wait to get back stateside to start 'yardin again.

Re: In search of the "Holy Grail"

Has to be a new take off short fleet box that was properly stored and complete so you could build a truck around that original paint box. Heck a longbox is impossible to find anymore too.

Hey Wess, what would be RPO "A80 Roof Drip Moulding"? I always thought the drip rail moulding was a GM accy, too, but then what would A80 be? GM must have made sold the set I have because the illustrated instruction sheet is the same type as what GM included with many N.O.S. parts

N.O.S. K/20 hubcaps "were" my holy grail for many years, till I found a dealer with 10 of them a good while back

V-6 factory A/C compressor brackets! I saw an original 1971 in-the-box complete 23 channel Delco accessory CB radio on Ebay once. I would have to imagine that was pretty rare.
