200r4
Has anyone installed 200r4 in C10? I have a '72 Super Deluxe shortbed w/ 350/350 combo. I have a friend giving me a 200r4 out of a '86 Pontiac 2plus2.

Re: 200r4
Thanks, all your info is useful. I have a quadrajet, will I have to change any linkage for carb?

I used the same location on the carb that the TH350 cable was hooked to, just had to change the pin to a clip type for the 200-4R cable to clip to. Just make sure the cable is 100% tight at full throttle

Re: 200r4
A 200R4 is an OK transmission, but will not hold up to high power in bone stock form. Keep in mind that GM never put one behind a big-block. The biggest stock engine in front of a 200R4 was a "mighty" 307 Olds. If you have it rebuilt with some of the upgrades it will be fine. If you want an overdrive and don't want to build it first, better get a 700R4. You can get a carb bracket for the TV cable from the car it was in or a Monte Carlo in the same year ranges. DO NOT install a 200R4 or 700R4 without hooking up the TV cable before you ever start it.

I'm not saying don't use a 200R4. I am saying that it might not last long if you take a used one out of a tired V6 or 305 A-Body and put it in a heavy truck with a 350/350 and trounce on it.

Re: 200r4
Everyone always talks about the 2004R being so strong because it was in the Grand National, the real reason GM used the trans is that it was the only overdrive trans they had that would bolt up to the Buick block, not because it is an amazing trans.

Re: 200r4
x3 bowtie overdrives... used them before and i've just ordered another 200-4r with all their accessories (crossmember, tv setup, lockup wiring) for my 1968 with a 350 smallblock.
bowtie overdrives and other builders modify/beef up the 200-4r to respectable/usable/reliable performance levels. |

Re: 200r4
I know right? I have read it at least a dozen times cause I always think it is a perfect saying anyway back to a 200-4r transmission

Re: 200r4
Thanks everyone. I will check on the kits. I knew I would have to add something for the lockup. I can't get my hands on a 700r4 right now, $$ is tight. I'm a "state" employee, elementary school counselor and Driver's Ed. instructor. The 200r4 is free, so my only cost will be the two kits mentioned. I'll check with my friend about a carb bracket. He has owned over 20 of the '86 Grand Prix 2+2's, so I know he has one somewhere. My 350 is stock and I don't plan on doing any upgrades. I would love to have a 5.3 at some point.

Re: 200r4
had a 200-4r in my truck before the 4L85e. Mine wasn't built strong enough to handle my motors torque/horsepower even tho it was supposed to be. Was OK in 1st and 2nd, but couldn't handle 3rd at WOT. That said....built properly they are a great choice for these trucks...will fill the spot a turbo350 was quite nicely.
