Re: Icon Thriftmaster

That's the one. There is also a You Tube video shot at SEMA with an interview with Jonathan Ward. I'm sure we'll see more of this in the magazines.

I like it, dont get me wrong but what am I missing? I don't see the value of over 200K. Cool finishing touches.

Re: Icon Thriftmaster

I agree, nice truck but nothing more than well engineered parts being put together, Art Morrision chassis, LS engine, Tremec trans, something any competent professional builder can duplicate at half the price, and something most of the talented folks on this board can duplicate at half that.

Oh yeah, its not a Chevy 3100 1/2 ton, but an "Icon Thriftmaster" the exta cost must be for the bespoke label. (The lizard hood emblem)

Ok, I'll bite. I only have a Master's degree and I don't know what the hell "bespoke" means?

That of which he spoke, ie "Icon Thriftmaster".

I had to ask my wife with an English Masters.

OK I used the term out of context, it is generally applied to tailored, custom clothing: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bespoke

Ha ah, NO "Donaldo"! Hey, since you're in Morro, did you go to the Cayuca car show a couple weekends ago? I probably talked to you! I think I spoke to everyone who had a '55-'59 truck. Even took a few pictures.

Hi Dan, nope I missed that one - got busy welding firewall holes and the weekend totally got away....

You should check out the yearly Morro Bay Car Show, some nice cars do show up . I think it was over 700 last time - it is a weekend event here. One of these years I hope my '51 gets there

Re: Icon Thriftmaster

Looked at it during the SEMA show. It has a lot of "fit" issues to be a $200K
truck. Ward insists that the car guys are not his target audience, so perhaps that doesnt matter.

Ha ha Translation: He's not trying to sell it to knowledgeable consumers of restored/modified older vehicles, he's trying to rip off a movie/tv star, musician, other celebrity that'll buy it on a whim.

dan; it's a limited production of only 5, better put your deposit down before they sell out
not only will you pay out the nose, but you risk parking next to a twin while shopping on rodeo drive

Pssh...but for that I'd be on the phone now buying one!

But seriously, I actually read somewhere that actor William H. Macy drives an AD truck. I THINK its more or less stock too, not a show truck.

I know one of the magazines ran a cover story on an AD that Eric Clapton had built for himself in light green with right hand drive for use in England. There are probably plenty more celebs that want to drive our old trucks too. These will be right up their....ahem...alley!

Re: Icon Thriftmaster

Since you mentioned Eric Clapton, I met the guy who painted his truck, he works as one of the subs for Roy Brizio Street Rods here in northern Calif. Every body panel was shot both inside and out and yes, it's "bespoke" for right hand drive.

Mine's a one of a kind. I guess that means I should sell mine for millions.

Yep, his market is those instant gratification guys with a pot load of spendable cash. They will park it in the garage between the Ferrari 468 and the Land Rover with dubs on it and tell everyone how much fun they have with it. Then a year or so down the road someone will buy it at Barrett Jackson for 45K after whats her name cuddled up to them to get the bid up.

8k frame 20 k engine 4 k for trans (maybe not that much) 8 k for a Dynacore cab 1600 for fenders 450 for a hood 1236 for a box. 2k for wheels and tires, 1500 for custom driveshaft and new thirdmember for Ford axle 2 k for interior and another 2 k for instruments and billet trim 500 for the grill and 300 for the bumpers 5k misc including wire kit and little stuff. That comes out to around 46K for parts. Add in the paint job and you are still close to 50 K and that is at retail prices. It rather boggles the mind that one could conceivably build an all new AD truck with no or very few old parts for under 50K and a lot less if you go with a milder engine.

Re: Icon Thriftmaster

Mr48 glad you did the math, I had the same thought. Probably need to add in 25K labor to assembly, still will have a tidy 125K profit. Wonder if he is building all 5 or just one for show and tell? I'd build a cover to hide all the engine crap and work a little on the under hood wiring, but maybe he leaves exposed to show how "hard and complicated" it was....

Re: Icon Thriftmaster

Jonathan Ward interviewed on the truck....and they ask him about the pricing...... apparently his calculator doesn't work the same way as ours.... he says he doubts he will make a profit selling 5 of these at $250,000.

He also said " I could ask anything for these... theres always 5 nuts out there"

Re: Icon Thriftmaster

Anyone else feel like the interviewers have no clue what they're talking about?
"Ya have the old school black rubber hosing, but the really cool....high end..brackets and connectors and aircrafter, and crimp on stuff.. and all the hose clamps and all the... clamps in general. Just really cool and really high end."
(At 5:35 in the video)
What were they supposed to use? Garden hose??

That and,
"You have to have a light on your licence plate and you have to have turn indicators and stuff like that, but that didn't exist in the past. So... where do you put it? So it works, but you don't really see it."
(At 8:47 in the video)
Really? Then what was this light on the bottom of this (original) brake lamp for?

No wonder ward is selling it for that price. He's found his customer base.

Re: Icon Thriftmaster

hardly a 20k engine, just a crate 5.3 with an optional supercharger (maybe 10K?), I would at least stuff an ls9 in their for that asking price..
