Door info needed!

Could somone tell me what the holes look like that these inner door panel attachment inserts go into? What I mean is, are they round or square holes? What size are they? My doors are aftermarket and I don't have these inserts installed, just some round, 1/4" holes. not sure if that is what I need for these inserts to work. Any pics showing these inserts installed?

the ones for the bottom of the door panel were welded in a square hole the size is 1/4 20 I believe
if your holes are not too big you could use some rivnuts ?

I'm not that familiar with the aftermarket doors but it sounds like they are made for the later style plastic push in retainers. The weldnuts just go along the bottom where the holes are in the metal door panel. The metal channel holds the door panel at the top. It depends on what style of door panel you are going to use what fastening system you would use.

Welded in? Crap! So the ones that Wes and others sell have to be welded in to work? I saw one set that had spring tabs on the back of them so I thought they would snap in. Looks like Rivnuts may be my best option.

I looked at the nuts in the package again and it looks like they might have a spring clip that holds them in. They are just hard to see in the package. If so you would still have to file the holes out square so they would fit.

Do you have 67-71 doors or 72 doors? Sounds like 72

I'm not going to speak on other models but on a factory 71 door panels had the nuts crimped in on the door not welded that I know of. The nuts were crimped into the door and that is why they fall out over time. If you have the orignal door and nuts sometimes you can chesil them back in tight are use a drift pin. I had 2 on each door fall out so I always had to duct tape them in place long enough to get the screw to start.

These are aftermarket doors, never had anything installed in them but I'm thinking they may be for a 72. (Has the screw hole near the vent window) Upper holes didn't line up with my aftermarket chrome upper trim piece either.

I'm thankful that aftermarket stuff is available but the quality is usually lacking. Instead of trying to make all those holes square, I'm going to install nutplates.

Why not get some of these. I don't know the real name of them though. They slip over the metal and have a threaded sleeve in them.

The 72 Doors have round holes GM or Aftermarket for the Christmas tree type clips for 72 only door panels and 67-71 doors have square holes for the cage nuts like you have bought. They require the flat 67-71 style door panels.

steve - I'm assuming you have a 69-71, and those inserts are crimped into the round 1/4" holes you are referencing. I have a 69 and a 71 door in my garage, and both use the same stuff you picture and go into round holes - 4 of them, evenly spaced at the bottom edge of the door panel.

Thanks for the good info! I actually have a '68 with round holes and no inserts. I bought this truck as a project and have no idea what the doors are. My doors just have the holes, nothing else. If I understand what your saying, the square nut inserts snap into the round holes?


Andy, the clip nuts you are showing will not work because the holes are not near the edge of the panel. That was my first thought so I brought home a handful of the clip nuts only to realize the holes were several inches from any edge.

I believe so - my truck isn't in my garage at the moment (at the body shop right now), so I only have an old door with no clips in it to reference. Almost positive that the ones you show in the 1st pic fit into the round holes - just can't take a pic right now, sorry.

Yea I was wondering if that was the case. It's been awhile since I had mine off. I did a complete door panel and used the christmas tree plastic ones.
