Truck salavge
Being new to this forum I have found a lot of good advice. The question I have is there is a 72 K-20 in pretty beat up shape and is going to the scrap yard next week. What should I pull off it. I see all kind of parts being sold and traded. I just hate to see it go to waste but I need to know what is worth pulling off.
Any info is helpful. |

Probably hard to say without pics. I'm no mechanic or expert at all on these trucks but these come to mind.
Mirrors Door handles Gas cap bumpers front inner fenders basically anything you can get off of it that's not rusted through or could be patched up fairly easily. if nothing else, you'll get some experience in removing parts. save all the bolts too! Don't forget the jack! And the wheels. People even buy those old rims. *When I was 24 and an utter noob, I pulled the entire front clip (hood, fenders, grill, inner fender (pass. side rusted out) ) off of a 1967 I found in a junkyard. The doors were already gone. I should have gotten the tailgate, the rims, and maybe even the seat. Just now I plan to use that inner fender on my truck and the other parts I'll now sell on this site. Oh, I should have gotten the radiator core support too. |

I see a lot of people looking for the front emergency brake cable, I guess it cut a lot when removing the cab. glove box doors lots of guys like ashtrays and radio block off plates, vent glasses, Since it is 72 and a K truck well the ob stuff it is a 4x4 so there is a lot there.

the complete frontend, transfer case, rearend (rolling chassis) is worth more than anything else it being a K20, Good luck, try to save what you can

How about if you *buy* just one part?
A blue tarp. Need some lunch money? Go out and pull the a/c control (or heater control, or radio, ...or, or, or, or)... .....List it (them). OTOH, if she's REALLY beat up (sheet metal's all gone), pull a fender and take it to the scrap man. Continue until you're down to the cab. Save the window glass and wind-wing assys. *Then* call the flatbed. Selling springs or a radiator core support, etc. (big stuff) is a PIA unless you do it locally...Wait! That's a PIA, too. Unless you advert exclusively on the Forum or by word of mouth, too many folks coming over to the house that you wouldn't necessarily, er, you know. Just wanna make room and not worry about it? Pull all you can...including door hinges and strikers...any little crap you have room for. Throw 'em each in a plastic bag and mark 'em. Pics.

I bought a radiator core support and front fender and had those shipped to WV from CA, so you CAN sell those interstate. Just go the extra mile and build a wooden crate. UPS badly dented my fender but they paid for the fix. Next fender I get, it's coming in a crate.
If you want to and can, buy the whole thing and part it out over time. People will buy these things. I do. |
