Muffler opinions...

I am in the process of collecting parts for my upcoming new 350 motor in Grandtruck (1968). I was given a free pair of nearly-new Flowmaster 42441 mufflers. However, I have heard people say that these are LOUD. I like to be able to hear my radio and talk on the cell phone without pulling over and turning the truck off. So just how loud are these, speaking as one who has never heard them? And if they are loud, will installing them near the rear of my longbed stepside make the cab any quieter? I already have dual exhaust mufflers on my 1978 Jeep J10 directly under the cab and they are noticible, but not too bad (but not they are not 42441s either).

Those are flowmaster original 40s. Not the loudest but definitely not quiet either. If you want em toned down a bit run pipes all the way out to the rear.

I always thought flowmasters sounded like a stock muffler after someone punched holes in it with a pickaxe. They make a sharp crackling noise Magnaflows have s softer sound but are still fairly loud.

40's can be pretty loud in the cab, especially if they are turned down or dumped with no tail pipes. I have them dumped in front of the axle, and I think they sound great. However, I am replacing them with 70 series Flowmasters to hopefully cut down some of the "drone" at cruising speeds. Every truck/car sounds different, but I have driven or rode in a lot of cars/trucks with 40's, and they all have a drone at certain RPM's. With that said, I still love the way they sound.
Since they were free, you could run them for a while and see what you think. If they are too loud for you, sell them and go with something a little more mello. That's my .02

I run series 40's on my small block and big block. I can hear my radio and talk on my cell phone just fine. Nothing sounds better than the series 40 flowmasters (just my opinion of course:-)

bigwheel15 has it right about having tips to go all the way out the rear to bumper. also, have mufflers mounted as far to the rear as possible.
