Water Pump cooling questions - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I have a new pump,new 4 core,new 185 thermostat, I dont have my heater core hooked up and both of the small heater hose ports on my water pump capped,I let it idle till it comes up to about 185 and it drops down to about 165on a cool day,on a hot day around town it was holding about 190. I noticed today letting it idle with my radiator cap off when it reaches temperature and thermostat opens the water in my radator isnt flowing the level is just sort of pulsing up and down. Im starting to wonder if I have a reverse rotation pump on there??
Is there anyway to tell without pulling the pump off and taking it apart?

If you had a reverse rotation pump you wouldn't have temps like that. You'd be overheated . The pulsing is the thermostat opening and closing.

How are you measuring the temp, gauge, IR, mechanical, electrical??? Where is the sender located?

I just pulled the pump out and took it apart,photos enclosed,,looks to me like it could work in either direction also has 2 bolt patterns on the fan hub my guess its universal?

I have a Summit mechanical gauge and I have it tap in on the passenger side top of the intake,,,thanks jim

While you got it apart put a wire coil in the bottom rad hose. It'll keep the hose from collapsing and the pump from cavitating.

no. water pumps do not work in either direction. I hope that you are going to replace it as long as you have it off. does not look like you have been running proper mix of coolant.

I agree, check the bottom radiator hose and make sure it has a wire coil in it, like a spring.
