Fuel tank under front part of bed. Anyone done it? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Looking at building, or putting a fuel tank under the front half of a long bed. Probably building due to space in that area. Right behind the cab, and in front of the axle.
Anybody done it? Got pics?

panel truck gas tanks have always been next to the drive shaft inside the frame.
my panel has a 2nd home made tank located outside the frame that would work on a fleetside bed.
always wondered why tank manufacturers didn't reproduce the panel tanks for use in trucks.
you might be able to have one made

Chevy did it in 47 and 48 and you can buy the stock tank and straps new. I'm not sure if the bracket that fastens to the frame to hold the tank is available though. I've thought about putting one back under the 48 since It will have a six in it and I can run both pipes down the left side.

From the asking price of new stock style tanks you might want to hunt down something that will fit where you want to put it though.

If you have an open driveshaft be sure to put a loop around it near the front u-joint.

The last thing you want is a failed driveshaft wiping around punching holes in the fuel tank.

That's a good idea even if you don't have a tank beside the driveshaft.

I saw that someone had the 48 style tank for a reasonable price the other day but can't find the link now.

Well maybe not that reasonable but this is what a stock 47/48 tank looks like.

I don't know what you've got for room between the frame rail and the driveshaft, but there should be plenty of junkyard candidates. Here's an s10 tank, I assume Rangers, Dakotas, Toyotas, etc all have tanks mounted here because they all use the space behind the axle for the spare tire.

My ongoing truck projects: 48 Chev 3100 that will run a 292 Six. 71 GMC 2500 that is getting a Cad 500 transplant. 77 C 30 dualie, 454, 4 speed with a 10 foot flatbed and hoist.
