An observation (and point of pride)
I was heading out to the oil patch the other morning, but we have a crew replacing power poles in front of the property (and we get 30 free old used telephone poles) but one thing happened that wont happen with any Mazda, Toyota, or honda that is 30 years old
The foreman of the crew asked what my old brown 82 K10 could be sold for, of course my reply was she isn't for sale... plus to make a profit i'd have to get somewhere near $18 K for her as that was what was paid for her. Normally when i get her out and take her to town i get notice and once every several months an offer to buy.

Re: An observation (and point of pride)
Pics?
(lol) I agree. I can't put gas in my truck without someone wanting to come over and visit about it or try to steal it away for a pittance. I had it at Home Depot last week loading it up with plywood and a guy came over and said "...hey, whattarya doing? That's not a work truck!" I told him that's what I got it for....27 years ago. Got some nice comments when we were picking up our Christmas tree this year, too. K

Re: An observation (and point of pride)
He'll even my mud riddled farm truck stepside gets noticed. And people usually offer petty cash for my red one. Then get offended when I tell them that's insanely low. "I can buy trucks like that on Craigslist" couldn't even build a free truck as good as mine or most of this forum.

Re: An observation (and point of pride)
I get complimented about once a month in the summer. I have had a couple of offers, but as soon as I tell them I grew up in the truck, most say "say no more, it's a good looking truck".

Re: An observation (and point of pride)
I have similar luck with my white 84... Nearly every time I get it out, someone asks what it would take to buy it, or if it is original. I found a less-than-creative way to solve the problem, and it has turned into a conversation starter with many car-guys. (Disregard the reflections from being inside the shop).

Re: An observation (and point of pride)
I had one that wasn't for sale. Then it was for a couple of days, and now it's gone. I sure liked that truck, but at least it went to a good home.

Re: An observation (and point of pride)
i get that a lot when i am at the boat ramp area or head into town with the truck. i actually had a guy made me an offer and asked me to follow him to the bank. this was before i added the tool box, headache rack, grille guard and flowmasters with echo tips. i told him i just picked the truck up.

Re: An observation (and point of pride)
I've been asked what I'd want for the jimmys at different times
I say start bout $10,000,(laughingly)they say thats way too much I say ok find a jimmy under $5-$6 grand certified.... then add $7-800.00 in rims/tires maybe another $1000.00 complete custom exhaust and that dosn't include any personal style/custom work done like the tach cluster, some think most have those and most don't even notice the $50.00 paint job lol not afraid to scratch it up I noticed new car orange peel seems normal now and smooth paint means its had body work lol If I want money for them I just park on the street! not for sale

Re: An observation (and point of pride)
get talked to or complimented everywhere with my crew. some days it's just nice being invisible in the DD.
gassing up, sitting at stop lights, McD's drivethru, on the ferry, pictures a lot too. but i have never, ever been asked if it's for sale or how much to buy. probably 'cause when they look at my truck, they have no clue how much money it's worth, but looks like a lot. (it is!) |

Re: An observation (and point of pride)
I've had my truck less than a week and already had two guys try to buy it. I've gone through a Volvo S60 R, BMW e30, 86 Bronco II, and a Honda CB550 in the past two years so all my friends have been giving me a hard time about how long I'm keeping this truck. I've wanted one for a long time so she's not going anywhere any time soon!

Re: An observation (and point of pride)
Pretty much every time I get her out and about its good for conversation and several offers. I would have to be in a really bad way to ever let her go. It's too hard to get cool points with my kids to sell off those cool points. They love the honks and thumbs ups probably more than I do.

Re: An observation (and point of pride)
I work in the oil & gas fields and almost every time we have some type of crew working for us,I will get somebody asking about my 86 or 82.These trucks are far from restored, just set up for daily work trucks. We were replacing a stuffing box on tuesday & on of the crew was asking about the 82,I like talking about it so we spent about 20 minutes in -35 deg C windchill talking about a 31 year old diesel! Never had too many ask if they were for sale, probably know my answer already....you dont have enough money!! But,ya it's cool,I ws driving past the school yard this fall & some kids standing on the corner giving me the thumbs up,that's cool too!!

Re: An observation (and point of pride)
My stepside always gets " what year is that" question...when I say it's an '84, they are always suprised. They always think its much older. Never got an offer for her yet.. But that's ok..she is not going anywhere.

Re: An observation (and point of pride)
"More than most are willing to pay" has always been my answer. I've had two notes on "Julius" and had several offers on my old '86 when I sold it back in March or so. I felt so bad after I sold the '86 that I tried to buy it back several times for more money than I sold it for before moving back to craigslist to find Julius. This time, I'll buy a better one before I sell the one I've got to avoid that gut ache feeling. Thinking of buying a Southern truck or two and see if I can flip them here to make some cash. Might be worth it for the adventure alone.

Re: An observation (and point of pride)
Had a few people ask to buy mine and it looks like crap but what got me is the one that asked my sister about "that old truck in the driveway" Said he use to have one and missed it…. the truck looked like this at the time

Re: An observation (and point of pride)
I hear that, I can’t stop the truck anywhere without at least one person coming up with a laundry list of questions or compliments. I always enjoy talking to people and hearing how their grandpa, dad, uncle, etc had one like it but sometimes it gets a bit time consuming when I’ am traveling around the Southwest section of the country. Its rewarding building and using classic vehicles but at times it does draw a lot of unwanted attention.
Funny story.....a couple years ago a work buddy and I were stopped somewhere in Utah for a pitstop when a guy walked up to my buddy and asked him how hard it was for him to install the 8.1L (This guy thought it was my buddy’s truck). My buddy replied back to this guy ….“hard for me to install!?....nah, it wasn’t hard for ME to install at all” (meaning him that wasn't part of anything with the build)

Re: An observation (and point of pride)
I'm glad I'm not the only one that isn't selling. I sold my previous tan 84 and it took several years (of doubt and regret) to find my current 84, and it has instantly become a member of the family. Anytime somebody makes an offer to buy it, I listen to them, then reply "that would make a good down payment" and the go on my way.

Re: An observation (and point of pride)
Larry, your truck just kills me every time I see it. Really dig just about everything about it. The only way I would like it more is if it was mine, that I had built. I will tell you that your rig is my inspiration for my rig. Never going to do all you've done, but my version of that type of truck is ultimately were I am heading.

Re: An observation (and point of pride)
After 10 months and me bugging this old man 5 times he finally sold me this old pickup for 700$. Shortly after I bought it I removed the camper, lowered it a few inches and drove it to the paint shop. The other day as I was up there looking at it's progress the owner of the shop comes up to me and says a guy has stopped by twice trying to buy my truck. Told me if I was interested he could give me his number.....I declined to accept the number. I sent a buddy of mine a progress pic and he tried to buy it for his son for 2500$.....I laughed and quickly changed the subject!
