Just found this out !
Well, after cleaning the frame up on my 65 C10,i found the stamped numbers, they don't match the vin plate on the cab upper door frame,
I have the bonded title in my name,i guess PO didn't know this as well, i was going to restore this,to original, and one day sell it,guess the frame don't make that much difference and have bought a bunch of parts to bring her back ! Keep going ? to much $ to stop now .. |

Re: Just found this out !
does the vin on the cab match the vin on the title? thats all i would care about, but don't loose the vin tag on the cab. a friend lost his building the car, and had to have it verified by the frame # to get a new vin plate.

Re: Just found this out !
I would be concerned enough to want to get it sorted out with the local DMV. I’ve read too many recent stories where a stolen vehicle missing for 20 years has been seized by law enforcement and returned to the original owner. Usually at great expense to the last owner that lost all his investment.

Re: Just found this out !
I went to local DMV office today, they said vin on cab and title must match,i just got the bonded tile, with my name and truck info sent to me from the State ,they said frame didn't really matter just the cab and vin plate. i had seen one site where the person grinded the frame smooth and layed down a like glass paint job..

Re: Just found this out !
Its illegal in just about every state... BUT same year GMCs the ones Ive seen have no VIN in their frames. I agree above with Mark and your DMV, your all set. Clean it off the frame and avoid this confusion.

Re: Just found this out !
I have a 66 gmc, the cab tag and the numbers on the frame do not match, previous (first owner) says it is original.......no monkey business. The DMV here said it was fine, would not allow one digit because it was supposed to be a letter instead of a number........and the number of digits was only 16 instead of 17 (guess that was how they came).......who knows, we have a good title and the truck came from texas with a good texas title so life is good...............

Re: Just found this out !
I have 6 GMC trucks and none of them have a Vin Number stamped on the frame. Most GMC trucks from 64 to 66 have different frames than a chev. they almost all have leaf springs on the rear.

There are often alot of other stampings on the frame, including GM part number, date codes and vendor numbers. A lot of people mistake those for the VIN stamp. Due to the nature of the assembly process the VIN stamp will be on the top (horizontal) flange of the frame, where it is difficult to see once the truck is assembled. Frame part numbers and vendor date codes are usually on the vertical side of the rail, where they are easy (ie, easier) to see. K

Re: Just found this out !
My frame has a build ID code, not a VIN, as far as I can tell. I rotisserie built this truck. Frame was bare metal. No numbers on top of the rails at all. I am second owner, Original owner is family so I know the history.

Re: Just found this out !
Since you have a bonded title, it doesnt matter on any of it, as long as the VIN on the door opening and the title match. Your bonded title will be a regular title at the end of 3 years anyway.

Re: Just found this out !
Here in Idaho if you buy an out of state vehicle they only check the vin on the cab or dash to trandfer it to Idaho. I spent 20+ years buying and restoring old Kawasaki KZ's and the neck vin and motor numbers never matched. They only checked the neck so any of them could have had a stolen motor and no one would ever check.

Re: Just found this out !
here in CALI I have bought and sold a lot of cars and trucks. the DMV people are not going to get off of there chair and check vin. numbers unless it is a SALVAGE TITLE. and then they tell you to have a chp or local cop check it.LOL

Since he has a bonded title, it was inspected by some local vehicle theft detective to get the bonded title. I just went through all that with my 69 Aristocrat Lo Liner TT. All you (OP) will need to do is keep that paper with you as you would your registration.
