68 c-10 & 72 c-10

I am a new member to the forum and I thought I would share my new trucks. I have always been into hot rods but never owned any trucks. I am in the process of finishing my upstairs and I was only looking for the back half of an old truck to use as a TV stand. While eating lunch with my best friend Adam (truck guy all the way). I spotted this truck pass by on a flat bed truck. I said to Adam did you see that truck? That is just what I need for my TV stand. He said did you see it was missing the front end (which I did not notice)? As soon as he said that I knew it was on the way to the local scrap yard so I took off after it. When I got to the the yard the driver was next in line to hit the scales. I asked if he would sell it to me if I gave him more than the scrap price. He agreed and dropped it off in my driveway. Below is a picture when he doped it off. I called my friend who came over (loves trucks) and he said I could not cut this truck up because it was too nice! Well I let him talk me into not cutting it up and then it all started. Can you tell where this is going? So I sold all the scrap that was in the back of the truck and cleaned it up a little bit. I decided I would fix it up and make it a driver. Hey the guy gave me a title for it also! The truck was hit in the front and parked about 10 years ago. I started looking for parts on the cheap and that led me to the next project. Have you guys ever done the same?

Re: 68 c-10 & 72 c-10

I work for a phone company and I knew about a truck that sat close to a cell tower I often work on. It had a lot of good parts I could use for the 68 like good a good motor, 5 lug rear end, disc brakes, AC, etc. I made a deal with the owner who had bought it in 74. The plan was to get it running and driving while I looked for good sheet metal for the 68 truck. My kids and I did a lot of cool burn outs in the old long bed but the more I drove it the more I liked it. Below is how I found it. Guess what happened next?

Wow, you got the hubcaps and wheel covers too! I am getting more and more excited about the prospects of getting my truck back on the road. Keep us posted on your work and hit us with pic updates often.

Re: 68 c-10 & 72 c-10

I loved on the old long bed some and it started to shine some. I found some wheels and tires on craigslist. They were used for a mock up for another project but never got used. I could not pass them up for the price. I tried them on for size and just as I thought the rear tires were too big.

They look pretty good to me. What size are the tires?

I can't remember the tire size. I will have to check on that. The rear tires were just to wide!

Re: 68 c-10 & 72 c-10

I enlisted the help of my good friend Adam and we set out to fix the rear tire clearance problem. He is pretty good with a welder and besides we thought what could we hurt it is an old long bed! He is working on a 51 ford truck and just sold a nice 65 C-10 that was a classic trucks top 5 pick a few years ago. I found another good set of wheel wells to make the original wider. We cut the floor and made two into one. They came out good I think. I decided to lower the truck so I have more updates to follow.

Truck has been static dropped now. Front suspension has been completely rebuilt (everything), new brake calipers, new rotors, drop spindles, drop springs front and back, c-notch kit, front and rear sway bar. Stops and rides pretty good. Just driving it and having fun with it!

Re: 68 c-10 & 72 c-10

Coupe of pictures of it back on the road now. I need to clean it up and take some better pictures of it now. I did get the other bed side trim piece on. I also found a chrome rear bumper for it. I don't know what to do with this short bed truck right now. It is kind of on the back burner because I am in the process of building my 1939 ford two door sedan! The long bed may still become a parts truck to the short bed 68 some day. The bed on that 68 truck is perfect. It does not have a dent in it. I don't think anything has hardly ever been hauled in it.

Re: 68 c-10 & 72 c-10

Here is the new TV stand. I plan to cut it down a little bit and mount it to the wall. I am going to build a stand that will be under the hood that the TV sits on. I will put everything under the hood and hopefully I will be able to change the channel if I get the TV box in the right location behind the grill. I did my bonus room in all knotty pine tongue grove. The hard woods will be here on Monday and I hope to get them installed over Christmas. I still have all the trim work to do also but I am getting close to finishing the upstairs. My bonus room will have all my gas and oil porcelain signs and hot rod stuff. I can't wait to sit down and relax someday!

Re: 68 c-10 & 72 c-10

Well two good looking trucks at first thought the second was gonna make a second short bed truck so it would be two different projects. That is kinda how mine started with one truck then it grew into three builders and four parts trucks?! That is some great looking trucks your working on enjoy them. Jim

Re: 68 c-10 & 72 c-10

I like the shortbed, but I love the longbed. I worked out of an Ochre colored 72LWB Super back in the early eighties.

BTW, I bought my Silverado SS at Friendly Chevrolet in Troy about 10 years ago.

Re: 68 c-10 & 72 c-10

Thanks for all the kind words and welcome guys. I am still learning how to use this forum. I need to figure out how to post a reply using the quote. I think I know how to do it if it's just one but not sure how to do multiple at a time.
I can't wait to get started on the TV stand but it's going to be awhile. I have to finish all the flooring, trim work, build about 8 doors, finish the two landings on the stairs, and seal the entire room. Sounds like a lot but it was just studs not too long ago.
The drop on the truck is 5 front 7 back.

LWB Chevy truxs rule! Good looking pair U have. I love the LWB for sure. I have a 71 also. Can't beat the ride of them either.

I went to East Mech for a year before my parents moved out to lake Norman back in the 70's.

Get out and drive the truck this summer and have some fun!
It sucks not being able to hear!

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Hit the "+ as you go down the list of who you want to reply to, and then on the last one click the regular quote button.

BTW, great save on the short bed, it's sad to see folks not realizing what they have, and that it's worth saving.
