What About These Heads?

These heads are:

No. 12558062...98......350..........L31 Vortec, truck, 64cc chambers, 1.94/1.5, 170cc intake port.

Time for valves on my current heads, maybe. I have these heads that are pretty "fresh". They were taken to a respected
shop and certified ready to install. I'll do that one-on-one again to verify if I get a, "these are good heads to work with" thumbs
up or two from you folks.

Also, I have a cam that came with the deal (free from a pal) with the markings:

1264
3 23

8300

on the end of the one side of the cam's "bearing circle" (???? I don't know what to call it) closest to the oil pump gear......

.....and an "M" and an "8" on the other half of the "circle".

I also got a set of aluminum valve covers, sixteen push rods, and some other stuff. Like these figure 8 deals that I don't recognize.

I'd like to put them on the 350 in my truck that has an earlier, possibly late 70's, early 80's (yet unknown year for the time being)
that's in there now and running well.

I'll likely not use the cam. But I'd like to know if that's a good number-match for these heads and an otherwise mild 350.

Also, besides an intake manifold and the obvious head and exhaust gaskets, does anyone have a guess on what else I'll need with
this sketchy info?

Re: What About These Heads?

The cam is a hyd. roller those "figure 8 deals" are the lifter retainers they help hold the roller lifters in the lifter valley bore.you also have to have the part known as the "spyder" it looks kinda like a spyder with arms that come out to the retainers and bolts to the center of the block.
Now you will also need a vortec type intake bolt pattern manifold as the older ones will not work. You can find some good ones on E -bay pretty decent price wise. Those vortecs will give you a 40 hp bump if nothing else was changed they are the best thing going for the small block that is semi affordable, you scored big. I would forget about the cam stuff you got there and get you a 268H comp cam it will go great in there. Jim

Thanks, Jim.

I found a spyder and it's on it's way to me. I was wondering how it's held into the valley on an older block casting. Does the block have to be
machined to accept the bolts? Or????

Looks like I do have all eight of the lifter retainers.

Also, I'm looking at cams and I'm going to go with your suggestion of the 268H. I guess the kit with new rollers and push rods would be
the smartest way to go, huh?

As for the intake manifold, do you have a preference as to which one? I'm running an Edlebrock Performer with a Street Demon right now.

And, sorry to bug, but two more questions: Any special attention as to what intake manifold gasket, or to the "seal" between the heads and
the manifold for this combo; and even more importantly, do you think the''ll be any problem using the headers I have on there now?

Like I said, sorry for all the questions....

Here's a pick showing the e-headers before the initial install:

dead on , you could not pick better heads for what you want , these are the best choice , no other stock or aftermarket head even comes close , some might make slightly more horsepower at certain rpms but will never burn as effecient as vortecs

your block is fine as is , as stated before you need a matched specific manifold and centerbolt valve covers , or adapters

Re: What About These Heads?

If you have an old block made prior to GM's factory roller blocks... then it won't have the bosses in the lifter valley to drill and tap for the spider mount. You'll have to go "retro-fit" lifters to run a roller cam.

The 268H from what I remember is a flat tappet cam. So you will need to find a roller equivalent.

Re: What About These Heads?

the 268 h comp cam is an excelent choice for a flat tappet cam that your older block will run with no modification , if you want to run a roller cam , you would need retrofit lifters , and a thrust button in the timming cover so the cam wont "walk" . Id stick with the cam hugger6933 sugested

Okay. Again, sorry to be such a lame-o, but with the comp 268H and original (flat) lifters, does that mean no spyder is required?
Just pull the old cam and replace it with the comp 268H?

Just a little "sidebar" here: I am going to pull the motor and take it to a respected machine shop with the cam and heads after
draining and pulling off all the tin.

But I want to know what I'm talking about, and have all the parts purchased and in hand....And, never know, I just might want to
pull those old heads and do a garage-job on it if I can't line up the dough to go "deeper".

I've turned every nut and bolt on this truck in doing a frame-off from the ground up over the last five years....that is, except having
my own hands in the rear end, trans, or motor internals.

The truck's running pretty good with a little smoke on start-up, and there's a quarter-sized oil spot that looks (after living under
there with a flashlight for hours) to be at the freshly replaced (on install about 400 miles ago) rear main.

But, because I'm a sick puppy that can't leave almost-well-enough-alone, I'm looking to learn more about the guts than I know now.
And, except for the dough, it may be the right time to go hands-on, and pull the motor and put on my new 062 heads that were a gift
from a buddy.

Sorry for being long-winded. I just wanted everyone to know how much I appreciate the input....With every word taken in.

Thanks to all for the previous info. And, thanks in advance for any more you might offer up.

My truck's the silver one:

Re: What About These Heads?

yes the comp 268 h is the same "flat tappet , hydrolic lifer" cam as your original ...
your stock timing chain set will work with it , but if I were you Id get ...,1, cam ,2, new liffters [a must with a new flat tappet cam } and 3,a new timing chain and gears .

Re: What About These Heads?

Sold some musical stuff today, so I'm starting to get the parts together.
With the intake, cam, lifters, timing chain and gears, and gaskets, looks like
I'll be in just under $500...That's before any required head work.

Here are the 062 heads:
