Re: 55-59 chevy to gmc dash swap???

short answer 55-59 gmc and chevy truck dashes will all interchange, they obviously will be wiring and cabling differences that need to be addressed. A couple of guys have put in tri five or 59-50 chevy auto dashes, they need to have the area next to the windshield trimmed to fit, the dash narrowed, and the ends modified. All GM cars had the same basic dash compartment dimensions, just the design, trim, etc were different. I have seen Pontiac and olds dashes in these trucks too.

Re: 55-59 chevy to gmc dash swap???

Should be a fairly straight forward swap, after drilling out all of the factory spot welds and it should drop in place!

I have changed them from chevy to gmc with no issues. Like ChuckDriver said drill out the spot welds and there are a lot of them.

Re: 55-59 chevy to gmc dash swap???

It isn't a "hard" project but will be a bit tedious before you get done. Get some good spot weld cutters and go after it. I've got a couple hundred to cut out on the cab for my 48 to change things around on it.

The bottom dash looks so futuristic even now, what exactly is that from Orrie?

Hi tlbob, I have a '55 2nd GMC. Be fun to see your swap. I rebuild my dash and guages earlier this year. I have a sister that lives in Littleton and another in Arvada.

Re: 55-59 chevy to gmc dash swap???

After dash removal by cutting factory spot welds with spot weld cutter blade, then fresh painting dash and dash top...how do you reinstall a dash? No spot welder.

I would start by finding a time machine then going back in time. Don't paint the dash this time instead, go out and buy a winning lottery ticket. Then when you get back you can buy a MIG welder and weld in your unpainted dash.....

Sorry couldn't resist.

Definately not Chevy. Might be mid 50's Olds or Pontiac. Or with the push button trans maybe Mopar???

Cool Re: 55-59 chevy to gmc dash swap???

TLBob,

Check out the build thread on the HAMB, he used a 56 olds dash. Looks pretty cool. I, myself, did not want to cut out the whole dash, just something different for the gauge cluster, that is why I am merging the gauge cluster from a 52 Hudson Hornet (see pic) incorporating some cool Autometer gauges in my 58 GMC 100.

Re: 55-59 chevy to gmc dash swap???

But why would you want a "different" dash outside the Truck genre, in my opinion it looks cool but makes no sense..Guess people got different tastes

Thumbs up Re: 55-59 chevy to gmc dash swap???

SCHRUMGMC,

Same reason why people put different grills in, to be unique. This is my plans.

Oh, by the way, if anyone needs a Chevy Apache dash, I cut one out of my truck and looking to sell.

Talking Re: 55-59 chevy to gmc dash swap???

Not sure if I am going the chrome route. Maybe painted or powdercoated either a cream color or a brushed aluminum color.

In fact, plan on using this bumper....so I guess, my theme will be "Braces with Tits!!!!"
