Quadrajet; whether to rebuild?

I'm having trouble starting my 83 dooly and I'm sure it's not the choke. The flapper stays open after I bump the accelerator a couple of times. Is it worth rebuilding? I really don't want to tie up a lot cash in it right now, but I really would like for it to start a little bit easier.

THe first time you open the throttle when the motor is cold, the flapper as you call it should be closed completely. When the motor starts the flapper should be pulled open about 1/4 inch by the choke pull off.
Is yours doing that?

Did it used to work? Maybe it is out of adjustment.

Richen it up. THe black cap on the side is held on by 3 rivets or 3 screws. Loosen them and turn the cap ccw while you hold the throttle open. The choke plate should close then.
Do you have power to the black cap?
Maybe take a pic for us.

Re: Quadrajet; whether to rebuild?

I will check the black cap tomorrow and see what I can do with it. I'll try to get some pics also. Thanks for the help so far.

Here's a link. Bottom of page 2 starts the choke info.

Re: Quadrajet; whether to rebuild?

After I found the manual choke knob it seems to start okay. Apparently at some point in time, somebody had converted to a manual choke. I always wandered what that knob was for! At some point, though, I'm replacing the manifold with an Edelbrock and an Edelbrock 700cfm carb.

Nothing like a Quadrajet that is working right! Find someone that can rebuild it.
