Can a 68-72 steering box be used in a 63?
I'm thinking of purchasing a 63 lwb that needs a new steering box. I would like to install power steering and was considering using a box I have from a 72. Can anyone tell me if I can swap the two, and if there are any other components which need to be changed?
Any info is appreciated. Thanks. |

The side of the chassis on the 63 is flat and in order to install a 69-72 steering gear it will need to be dented in between the bolt holes. You will also have to drill one hole, because the 63 only has 3 and the 69-72 Power steering gears require 4. You can install thick washers between the steering gear and frame rail, but that results in running the gear off center and that makes the steering ultra sensative. (Dangerous in my opinion). Wes, thanks very much for the quick response.
If I recall correctly, isn't there a conversion kit available, or was it only for 67/68 with the flat rail? Thanks again. |
