Questions on A/C

I dont have it, I am thinking about putting it in since its over 100 in summer here.

so. questions are:

1. how much am i looking to spend on a complete system? Average, Guestimate

2. do i have to modify the air box in the cab, or can i used my existing vents (defrost and floor)?

3. Break it down, whats all involved to go forward with this?

for the aftermarket your looking at right around a thousand bucks and i believe you can use your original vents and you get extras to enhance the ac

I bought the one that 69 1/2 Six Pack Bee got from GMC Paul. All I have to say is that he must be a excellent mechanic to get it installed in an afternoon. This setup removes the heater outlet and air box. The unit that ships installs under the glove box and has the heater hose come through the firewall on a plate you install where the old evaporator was installed. I had to modify the firewall to allow the unit to sit flush. Basically involved removing a two raised lips and widening an already existing opening. I had some problems with their instructions and what was supplied. They did call me after the close of business to find out what my problems were and help me through the installation. My truck was originally A/C equipped. The package they sent gave me a new center vent which I took apart and used the old back side with the new front for the vent. That was great because the front was beat up on the old one. It came with all the duct hose needed and the appropriate adapters. I believe that this install could go fairly simple and the cost is alot better than Vintage Air, but you might have to do some messing around with the Old Air kit. Mine ran around $900 from GMC Paul and you have to throw in the cost of having a shop evacuate and charge the system. Me, I'm to damn stubborn to pay someone with the right tools so I'm buying my own since I have an A/C and R background. If you consider this, the vacuum pump alone run $200. I have lots of cars and it won't take long to for the equipment to pay for itself.

I bought a Sure-Fit unit from Vintage Air reseller in my home town for ~ $900 --- that included everything ( minus OEM control panel )

It installed fairly easy and worked like a champ ---- the only problem I had was the rubber hoses from the compressor to the evaporator & condesor were too short, but one call to them in Houston and the shipped a new set to my spec's w/o charge.
