Terminology and acronyms

I am new here so please excuse my ignorance. I searched for awhile but I finally gave up. Is there a place here that has explanations for commonly used acronyms and phrases?
For the moment,what does it mean when someone says a truck is bagged? Also what is an AD truck? That's all I can think of at the moment but I'll probably have more.---Jack

I can't help feeling like the new kid in school.(I'm 64)

Re: Terminology and acronyms

'41-'47 1st series was called Art Deco.
'55 2nd series-'59 was Task Force.

The 1st & 2nd series thing refers to those with mid year body design changes.

Welcome.. Questions are good things..

Re: Terminology and acronyms

When I first joined I had to ask what AD (they told me Advance Design) and TF (of course Task Force) meant.
Everybody was real polite about my ignorance.

I did not know '47 was a split year, too, until just now.

We all have to learn, eh?

Re: Terminology and acronyms

I always thought a fleet side was because they were the smooth sided trucks that fleet owners would buy (as opposed to step sides). I was never sure why a fleet owner would prefer one over the other?

More recently I realized that the fleet side name came from its slipperier side making the truck fleet of foot.

So fleet side loosely translated means slippery side,
(as opposed to the less slippery step side box with protruding fenders).

That explanation makes so much more sense.

Re: Terminology and acronyms

IFS = Independent Front Suspension
IRS = Independent Rear Suspension

These trucks all came originally with a straight I beam front axle and leaf springs. Many upgrade to ifs not only for improved ride & handling but also because this upgrade typically includes disc brakes, improved steering (and rack & pinion on some). It enables the use of air bags of you want them as well.

IRS - think the rear suspension as on Corvettes and Jaguars. Same benefits as ifs as to ride and handling. Superior, though it makes the trucks less capable in terms of carrying loads.

Clipped- As in a truck has been clipped. It means that Suspension from a donor car has been installed in the truck to improve the ride and handling.

Re: Terminology and acronyms

Good lists, we tend to forget that folks new to these trucks or enthusiast vehicles in general may not know the terms we toss around or the acronyms for those terms.

We haven't got to the locality specific terms for certain vehicles and components that we run into from guys in UK, Europe or Australia or other places.
