Question 2001 Silverado ABS question

I have a 2001 Short box Silverado and the brake lines are rotted bad to the ABS box. The truck has 4 wheel disc brakes. I was wondering if anyone has ever completely removed the ABS box and just run lines. I would need a proportioning valve I imagine. Can anyone give me their thoughts or direct me to the right thread? Thanks

why would you get rid of the anti locks? why would you not just fix it properly?

Do I really need anti locks? None of my old trucks have them and I stop fine. I guess I don't want to spend hundreds of dollars on it and time I don't have. I am just wondering if anyone has done it and what's involved. Ill probably put a cab engine and 700R tranny or something in it. I don't need sensors stopping my truck from working properly. I think that's ridiculous.

I'm not sure if I quite understand the issue or why it would be so expensive??? All you're replacing is lines, correct? So just replace them like they were. Remove old crappy rusty lines, use them as a guide, and bend up your own new lines.

Are you saying the ABS box needs to be replaced as well? If that's the case, don't buy one from the dealer, I found quite a few online for around $200. Expensive, yes, but with new vehicles it's better to have stuff functioning as intended. Also, if where you live does annual vehicle inspections, you'll fail if the ABS module is not working, it will send an error code to their scanner.

the lines gotta be replaced either way. i dont like abs but it would be a pain to remove. plus tow haul wont work right with it gone.

because removing anti locks is assinine! so there was nothing to say except fix it right! talk about passive agressive!

I feel for you estcoastcivil as I am not a fan of ABS either. But it is here to stay. I have an '01 Suburban and I just lost brakes due to total line rust back in August. I learned that GM recently has added a complete brake line replacement kit for these trucks. The lines come pre-bend and have a significant improvement in there anti-rust coating over the OEM. The kit cost me $92 from dealer & does not contain the 1/4" lines that run along the rear axle, but they were easy to bend up from a coil of line. I had to cut & install junctions in 2 places for the RF wheel & one junction for the line going to the rear. I left a section of the OEM line to the rear and used it as platform to mount the new line to. That section of line goes between the gas tank & frame, I didn't want to drop the tank to get to it. I used an electrician's snake to pull the new line through that area from front to rear. I also R/R the master and cleaned it out, bench bled it before re-install. The whole job took me about 8 hrs. & I did it with the vehicle on jack stands in my driveway. I used a simple vacuum bleeder to pull new fluid throughout the system. I still have a soft peddle (it always had it) but the ABS works as good as it did new. If you need any more info about this job I would be happy to help. Hope this little bit helps. Luke

You can pull the fuse for the ABS disabling the ABS system but still providing normal non ABS braking. They you can pull the ABS sensors as per the recall for cleaning etc. The rusty failing lines are GMs way of going cheap. I lived in NY for 30 years with salt etc and never had failing rusted brake lines--hell we lost frames before the lines went out but that may have to do with the type of brake fluid.
Chevrolet really needs a massive class action law suit to get their attention on the failing brakes on their trucks due to rusted out brake lines. It is beyond belief that they get away with this crap. My 02 Silverado failing ABS is preventing my truck from stopping safely and the brake lines are rusting to the point of having to replace all the lines with stainless---arg!!!!!!
