setting auto choke

Ive got a 85 350 motor in my truck that has a electric choke. And have a few questions about getting it to work right,.

I got 12volts to it when i turn the key on but it doesnt seem to open, is 12volts the right amount that should go to the choke?

And i heard your suppose to adjust the choke in order for it to work right. How do you do This? Ive tried before by loosening the screws and twisting the choke to full open when it was a warm day out and the truck has been running for a little bit.
A few months later in the winter when i went to start the truck the choke was fully open when it should have been fully closed. Did i just adjust it the wrong way?

With the engine cold, you should adjust the choke to close with the throttle lever just cracked open. Depending on what carb you have, depends on how tight the choke should shut. The older quadrajet carbs needed about 1/8" gap, where the Edelbrock carbs should be closed, but not tight.

When the choke is closed there needs to be some play...if they are closed to tight it won't open....they can be tricky. lol.

What carb does it have ?? does it have a choke pulloff?? can you take a picture???

If it is closed and doesn't slowly open with the 12v supply the element can be burned out, it is almost like a stove element, they can be replaced new.

not mine but same as the one in the first picture.
When i initially set it up in the summer i could see it slowly opening but wouldnt open all the way. Then i tried to start it in the winter but it was set fully open. Likewise the way i have it wired is just one wire to the choke (i assumed it was grounded by itself)
looking at the inside of the choke the little copper wiring doesnt seem to be busted in any spot.

You can remove it from the carb and ground out the side of it on the metal surrounding the cap and batt pos to the terminal and watch it "slowly" move, it is extremely slow but will move almost a 1/4 of a turn total. Mark it first to see how much it moves first, hard to watch by eye actually, if it doesn't move at all when hooked up cold after about 30 seconds or so then the element is burnt out so replace it. They adjust tension wise on the carb counter clock wise, edelbrock is the opposite.

I have one of those phenolic spacers, so the carb is probably not grounded.

Carb will ground thru the bolts to the intake and intake to the engine and so on.
