Guys

Im setting up my 71 C10 to be a daily driver. I do drive quite a bit of freeway miles.

Im looking at the Hankook Optimo H724 for 400 out the door (set of 4, installed) vs Michelin LTX MS/2 for 710 out the door (set of 4, installed)

both claim 70K mile warranty

Are the Michelins really worth the extra 310 bucks?

thoughts/opinions?

uniroyal tire paws. Will swear by them if running stock 235/75-15" tires. I wouldn't use anything else.

I generally would say Michelin but, I had hankook Optimos on my 68 dd and they were the quietist tires I have ever owned. Super smooth and I was really surprised because the cost was low.

Can't vouch for Hankooks (never owned 'em) but I've had several sets of Michelins since the mid-sixties and never had a complaint. Mileage claims (or warranties) aside, Michelins usually deliver more miles, often a lot more, than many other tires. They're not the cheapest but you sometimes get what you pay for. If a tire costs half as much and lasts half as long, you still need to add the cost (and time) of mounting & balancing that extra set of replacements.

Not saying Hankooks wouldn't be the best bang for the buck. But for me, Michelins are simply a known good value.

yeah, ive had michelins on cars before and i loved them. just cant get over the hankooks being so much cheaper. and they seem to get decent reviews

I have Michelin LTX M/S on my '01 Tahoe. I got the Tahoe at 164k miles with 2 almost new ones and 2 almost worn out. At about 170K I put 2 on, they lasted to 253K+. At about 225K I replaced the original good 2 and I am at 265K now and they have plenty of life left. So 80K+ is easy on these. Good quiet ride, good handling, great wear. I am sold on them. Well worth the money IMHO.

I have Hankook Mileage Plus tires size P235/70R15 on my 1999 4 x 2 Cop Tahoe. They were on the truck and practiuaclly new when I bought it now have 18,000 miles on them with no issues, not even a flat. I've driven to California and back ( 1800 miles one way ) twice and ran at 75/80 MPH down the I15 all day long. The tires are quiet, smooth great in the rain and I've taken 45MPH mountain curves at 65/70 mph and the tires gripped the road like they were glued to it.

Both are good tires, I hate the name HANKOOK but I love saving money.

Can't speak for the Hankook's, but I've had several sets of the Michelin LTX's over the years and they have been the best tires I have ever owned. I'm at the point now where they are all I buy. Great mileage, good all around performance.

The Michelins are awesome BUT- I got a set of hankooks on Blu because they were really inexpensive. I can't believe how little weight was required to balance them on factory steelies. I think one wheel only needed a 1/4 oz. to balance. And they are super quiet. I'm very impressed so far. Not many miles on them but based on what I've seen so far, I'd try them out on a daily driver in a second.

For the last 6 years, Ive put between 80K and 110K per Year on my work pickup. Naturally, its all hiway driving---in all weather. My hiway truck is a crew cab ford. I always get between 110K and 120K out of my Michelins---and they are still hiway Safe when I change them. They are higher priced---but Nothing will out last Michelin.

May I intrude with one question on the subject? Who has the best HIGH HEAT/checking durability?. In AZ tires crack long before they wear out on my vehicles.

I got close to 90,000 miles on the first set of Michelins on my Envoy. Bet you can guess what I put back on it... That was 50,000 miles ago, and I don't see any reason why I won't get around another 40,000 more. That's mixed driving too, not just super long distance. That mixed city, country, and Michigan's finest potholes that you can stick in front of a tire. Yes, they were expensive, but when you figure everything into it, in the long run, I doubt I would have saved any thing to go with a cheaper tire. OH!!! and they are excellent as far as ride, noise and traction also! Buy the Michelin's... my 2 cents.

I almost choked on my pizza when I saw a thread comparing Hankooks to Michelins. There is no comparison! Buy the Hankooks to save money, buy the Michelins to get a good tire. Are Michelins worth the extra money? Without a doubt! I have driven, sold and mounted/balanced just about every tire out there and Michelin in tops in my book.

I had a set of Michelins on my 06 GMC crew. They lasted real well, road quiet and smooth. They have a great reputation.
When it came time to replace them I did some comparisons. What I found was the Michelins have a deeper tread depth than others by 2 to 3/32 inch.
This makes for a higher mileage tire. They are made well but the deeper tread depth is a good part of the reason for them lasting longer so are they really that much higher considering the extra miles?
The extra mileage may offset the higher price.
For me I liked the extra security of the Michelins since my wife is on the road a lot.
You can go to Tire Rack for instance and compare brands. They give all the important information you could want on each brand.

Just last week I did hear on the news Michelin has issued a recall on some of their tires. You may want to google that.

I had a set of Hankooks on a 97 GMC a few years ago. I had no problems with them. I'm not fond of the name either.

Longhorn 70 has a good point.Will you be putting enough miles on them to wear them out before they age out?IIRC they recommend 6 or 8 years max life due to weather checking.Tread depth is only one charachteristic to look at for longevity,rubber compounds and many other factors also have an effect.

Michelin gets top ratings by CONSUMER REPORTS (last time I checked which was 2010). My dad has run Hankooks on his GMC Canyon and I have UniRoyals on my 72 (but they've sat for 7 years).

The Summics on my Honda Accord make a little noise but they do pretty well and ice is their only match. *At that point I back off and put on my tire chains. (It has to be a steep, icy hill to stop them though).

Weigh out the options, make the best choice you can for your situation.

We have Hankooks on our Trailblazer, no problems with em at all. The boss man at work drives a Landcruiser. He has almost 400k on it and all he has ever run was Michelins. Those tires seem to last forever, he loves em. They are expensive compared to the Hankooks, if I wasn't so cheap I would be running Michelins.

I run Michelins on everything I drive. They're worth the extra money. They wear like hockey pucks, but with the soft sidewalls they ride great.
