Power Steering Box Quality

I have had a leaking PS gear box on my 1968 for the past 5+ years. I have replaced at least twice with a remanufactured gear box from my local Mom & Pop auto parts retailer. After a day or two the gear box started dripping again. I returned the gear box and it was exchanged for another one but it started leaking again.

I am wondering where I could find a high quality gear box. I want to try NAPA, Car Quest, O'Reilly, Autozone, etc. Does anyone have any recommendations of what gear box I could use that does not leak? I get tired of leaving a pan under the gear box to catch all the fluid.

Re: Power Steering Box Quality

I will look up Red Head Steering Gears. I was looking for advice on the quality of NAPA, AutoZone, etc.

Shipping is always expensive so that is always a factor.

First, since you are in another persons thread, the only questions you should pose for yourself are ones that are relevant to the original question. Hopefully helping to enlighten the original poster as well as many others with similar questions.

When you ask anything else not relevant to the original question, you are basically hi-jacking his thread. No one is likely to answer you.

Second, your first and third questions are common ones that would be easily answered by a quick search of the forum.

Third, your second question is one that has some real merit to the rest of the forum, and would very likely get lots of responses if it was it's own thread.

My recommendation is to search the threads for questions 1 & 3. Then start your own thread on the chopped top/windows question.

Thanks,
Curtis

I have one of these units, 3 years now, no leaks, no looseness, great product. Costly, yes, but consider your time to R&R a few times with DYI auto house junk.

Re: Power Steering Box Quality

O'Reilly's, Carquest, Autozone and Napa... They all pretty much use the same suppliers... With Major parts stores like those you are rolling the dice on quality rebuilt parts do to a "assembly line" style of rebuilding... This is just my observations and experience on these types of stores.... Your experience may be different...

I got one from Autozone for $120 with exchange. Had it for several years now, nice and tight, no leaks, no complaints.

To the OP- Red head steering gears are the best and located here in Seattle. I'm pretty sure the owners cousin has a shop somewhere in North Dakota that dose great work. Call em up and ask.
