Junkyard special
I went the other day with my brother to the local salvage yard to look fro parts for his Yucon. We ran across a 1981 3/4t truck with a receiver hitch still on it. I've been looking to buy one for some time but didn't want to order one to get it. I wasn't sure that it would fit. So I did some resurch here on the board and came to the conclussion that it should fit my '70 GMC. I went back and got it. The problem I ran into was whoever owned the Chevy welded the hitch to the bumper (which is nothing more than scrap metal). The salvage yard wouldn't just give me the bumper. I worked out a deal with them to sell the bumper back to them for what i gave for it. Any way when I got it home, I took a grinder to the welded seams and separated the bumper from the hitch. I cleanded the hitch up figure out what I had. Turns out that it's a Drawtite class IV hitch part #41001. It only cost me $25 and a little time. I just need to clamp it to the frame, drill a few holes and mount that puppy up.

Re: Junkyard special
Hate you guys that always find good deals.... The local junk yards here wont sell parts or whole vehicles. I saw a plain 71 or 72 C-10 long wheel base that looked complete go to the crusher. I really wanted, needed the cab and windshield and other parts, but I guess scrap metal has a better price than a good vehicle being saved. The owner refused to talk to me. I even offered 3 times the current scrap price for it.
And welding the hitch to the bumper is common practice. It helps to stop the hitch from bending when it is over loaded. Something I never do....

Re: Junkyard special
Hey big dog, live right up the road from you and was wondering what wrecking yard you're going to. I can't find anyone around that seems to know where any are. Thanks
