6 banger exhausts,Tell me your story

Next month the truck will be hitting the exhaust shop, The original exhaust manifold has got a pretty mean leak so time for a replacement. I am considering which route to take, and hoping your experiences will help to make the right choice so tell me your set-up and what your experiences are.
I am looking for a great exhaust tone (V-8), a little rumble to set it apart but not so much cab drone, that's pretty much all I require. Any performance gain would be a bonus.
What I am considering..
Plan A Replacing the manifold back to OEM and running a single performance exhaust, This is the the most cost effective but not sure if I would get that deep sound I am looking for.
Plan A1 Same as above but running a y pipe to make it a dual, I think this might get the sound I want. This would run about an additional 250.00 from plan A
Plan B Going with Hedman headers and running a true dual exhaust, I am estimating that this would be an additional 300.00-400.00 in cost from plan A1.
Thanks for the input guys, Look forward to seeing whats out there.

Btw I looked into Clifford, Would love to run them but throws my budget out of wack

I have uploaded a video of my 67 c10 250 inline with dual exhaust. I have 2 dynomax bullet mufflers on it. I really like the way it sounds. It will sound even better once I put a new cam in it. I will eventually put headers on it as well, but at least you can hear the dual exhaust.

Re: 6 banger exhausts,Tell me your story

>>A little rumble<<

That can mean different things to different ears. I was hoping for some rumble with new mufflers on my truck and didn't get it.

About six years ago, I put Edelbrock SDT Chambered mufflers on my C4 Vette. I liked their sound and even with slight lifting of the throttle they produced a very pleasant rumble. The Vette has the 4+3 manual transmission and with normal or slower gear shifting, the rumble was audible between each gear. The SDT's are not loud by most comparisons, but you can definitely hear what the engine is doing.

I decided I wanted that sound on my '67 and installed two SDT's to replace the two old oval mufflers that I had on there.
I didn't get what I was hoping for. It is now, slightly throaty, which the old mufflers were not. It seems to have, by seat-of-the-pants measurement, a little more mid range power.

Six cylinders have a rappy sound at rpm that I don't really care for. Actually, I hate it. The SDT's did reduce the rappy sound a little. I have since added a cross-over or "H" pipe and it has taken away almost all that rappy sound. That's a plus.

As you can see in the first picture, the header collectors are staggered by 4-5 inches. I carried that stagger all the way to the end of the tail pipe. In order to have both ends of the "H" pipe the same distance from the collectors, the "H" is curved. Both ends of the "H" enter the exhaust pipes at 90 Deg angles and equal distance from the collectors. That should produce equal pressure on both ends.

I believe the difference in sound between the two vehicles is because of the length and size of the tail pipe, after the muffler. Someday I would like to increase the size of the after muffler pipe to a much larger size. The Vette mufflers are the same, but have dual outlets that are only 8-10 inches in length.

Edelbrock no longer makes that or any muffler. I'm not trying to sell you on any muffler, nor should anyone. The size and length of the pipe and muffler location will change the sound from any muffler.

I'll jump in as I may be forced to change my exhaust out once the truck gets bagged. From the clip aclay17, your truck sounds good. Any more clips revving up or going down the road? What's the sound like inside the truck?

Scottcoda, I use to have a "70" with a 292 and I put headers on it with duals and economy brand turbo mufflers. I really liked the raspy sound when you mashed the gas pedal!

Re: 6 banger exhausts,Tell me your story

My 70 had a six in it, and someone had put what they considered "performance" exhaust on it. To me it sounded like a UPS truck.

The best bet is to be able to listen to it before you buy. That's why YouTube videos like Aclay17's are nice.

Re: 6 banger exhausts,Tell me your story

This is when I had a stock 250 in my 63 Chevy II.

Cast iron headers from Langdon's and 2" duals with thrush turbo mufflers. Also, the bark at higher rpm sounds better when playing at speed than in neutral. I like it because of a decent note at idle, has a bite when on the throttle, yet doesn't drone at speed. I've driven this car cross country a few times and it is nearly silent at cruising rpm.

It sounds a little different now, as it has a different 250 with higher compression and a decent cam, but the top end sounds similar.

I would suggest option A as putting duals on a 6 seems "ironic" at best. Perhaps a 'straight through glass pack' muffler would help with sound. ???

Again JMO, but put your money/effort into 'upgrades' that return something tangible. JMO ..........

cheers

I'm heading this way right now, but I may change my mind later:

I'm still a ways from firing it up for the first time, though.

I put a flowmaster 10 series on my truck it has a 250. It has a good tone but loud. Everybody thinks it a v8. I like the way it sounds.

Re: 6 banger exhausts,Tell me your story

O.K., stock manifolds, removed the heat riser, 2.5" duals with a crossover right behind the transmission, 50 series Flowmasters, angle out behind the rear wheels. Very unique sound, never confused for anything else. Before you remind me he's asking about 6 bangers, it is! 351 V-6.

Anyway, I would go with option 'A'.

Thank you sir! I really like the way it sounds it doesn't drone on at highway speeds and doesn't sound like a "ricer".

Not at the moment I don't have anymore any reving of the motor. You can kind of hear it in the attached video from the Hot Rod Power Tour this year.http://youtu.be/SXJmsUEMiu0
At 13:24 I am in the lane next to the person videoing and you can hear the slight rumble that it has at 13:28-13:30.

3 inch dual straight pipes! And buy a set of ear protecters! Loud when you want..quiet when you want!

Yes. I went for the ceramic coating, too. It's still in mock-up stage in the picture, but that's the idea. Getting closer. If nobody bugs me and there's no emergencies, I should have it pretty much nailed down this weekend.

Re: 6 banger exhausts,Tell me your story

Ive got stock manifold and a 2.5" magnaflow run outside the drivers framerail and out in front the rear tire. Its too quiet, but I really wasn't looking to attract much attention to a stock 250. I kinda wish I went glasspack. This small case magnaflow is straight through and still very quiet at all rpm. But, it doesn't drone so i'm in no hurry to change.
