How to know if your Rochester Quadrajet is worth rebuilding

Looking for information identifying Quadrajet's and rebuilding them.

This is the one on my 80-82 305 in my '79. A friend of mine said that you cannot rebuild the carb if gas is coming out of the plunger area. Also, was this originally electronically set up? The manual choke wasn't hooked up when I bought it.

They're all rebuildable. Usually when they leak outta the accelerator pump stem it's from a flooding condition.

One of the main reasons to rebuild a carb is if it's leaking from the accelerator pump plunger area. That means the pump is leaking fuel instead of pushing it into the engine when you first step on the gas which will cause a stumble on acceleration.

As for the stumble... sounds about right with what I was having, that along with bogging down on the trails/no acceleration rpms... then again its a 305.

When I first bought the truck, there were no in line fuel filters for the carburetor and the fuel filter at the front of the carb was removed. Not good.

Looking for a good rebuild kit and I think Im going to look at cliffs high performance kits a little closer.

unless you are good at rebuilds, might want to look around for a local carburetor rebuild shop. got my done for $250 by a shop that specializes in old carbs . found worn bushings, etc that would not be noticed with me doing a rebuild myself.

The way I look at it, you've gotta start somewhere. I also have a second Quadrajet laying around so if I fail then I will have that... but I'm not going to fail.

Is the second Quadrajet a good one? If so why not just install it? Then you could also play with the one that needs rebuilt. MO

The second one is from a mid 80's model with an electronic choke setup. I'll have to look and see what it is exactly. The one on the 305 has been converted to a manual choke (which the PO disconnected) and it looks to be a vacuum/heat setup originally.

Everything is all chopped up in there so I need to find out exactly what I have and determine if I want to go the electronic choke setup or not. What do you guys have?

The electric choke is easy and the most adaptable in terms of manifold swapping. The carb in your pictures is not an electronic feedback carb. Get Cliff Ruggles book on the Quadrajet and you won't have any trouble rebuilding that Quad!!!

A good friend of mine keeps insisting that edelbrock is the way to go and although its an easier carb to work on, from what ive read I believe the quadrajet will do me just fine for my purposes.

I know its not going to be easy especially since I've never even opened up a carburetor before but there is plenty of knowledge here and on other websites that I'm sure will help me.

I'm not sure what your application is but on a stock or mild motor that carb is just fine. I am not that impressed with any other edelbrocks that I have run in the past. Not that they were bad, just not much better than the quadrajet so I say go for the rebuild!

The application is for a stock 305 but will end up for a stock/mild 350. I just need to find one now.

Thats the reason I wanted some input from here, I was watching some videos last week and I thought I would go ahead and do it. Got the weekend off and I'm going to try and start working my M/T valve covers. If I get a chance to Ill stop at the book store and see what they have.
