Truck runs ad then shuts off
Went to crank it up and it ran for a minute but then died on me.I'm sorta thinking its the Regulator or the Carb
Any ideas?

Re: Truck runs ad then shuts off
Fuel pump diaphragms get brittle and then die. Rust collects in the tank, then jambs the filter. Dirt gets in the carb and fuel quits flowing. Mice eat the wiring. Without more data, who knows? Did the truck sit for 10 years? 10 days? Give us a little more to work with.

Re: Truck runs ad then shuts off
Need more details. Maybe in NC it was a cold day and your truck just has to warm up before it will idle without stalling . Gotta figure out if there's something wrong before you fix it.
After your truck shut off, can you crank it , or not ?

Re: Truck runs ad then shuts off
You may go through several fuel filters before all the trash is cleaned out of the system. I end up doing that every time I get a rig running that has been sitting for a long while.

Re: Truck runs ad then shuts off
That could be the accelerator pump in the carburetor. Also, some fuel filters will let crud past them once they get clogged. This will let the crud get into the carb. Do you know when the carb was last rebuilt?
More possible fun... If the filter is clogged because of rust in the gas tank, the tank will need attention.

Re: Truck runs ad then shuts off
you should have one of these before your fuel pump to keep trash out of the teeny tiny check valves in the pump.

Re: Truck runs ad then shuts off
Great idea to get a clear one. Then you can see how fast things are getting clogged up.

I've seen quite a few nice cars go up in flames due to a glass filter. I would pull the tank, flush it, put in new fuel and swap out the filter. It's fairly easy to install with a bit of rubber hose and clamps. If it still stalls after a minute or when you hammer the gas pedal you might have some gunk that got into the carb. I'm a big fan of Seafoam for flushing out the fuel system which will occasionaly clear out the crud but if that doesn't fix it a carb overhaul to clean out all the small orfices may be in your future Last edited by 55metalmonkey; 01-16-2014 at 01:40 PM. |

Re: Truck runs ad then shuts off
before your fuel pump. the glass bowl is after your fuel pump.
if you have steel line into your fuel pump cut out a couple inches and use rubber fuel line to install the filter.

Re: Truck runs ad then shuts off
stupid thought but why do they usually put fuel filters somewhere around the engine? Wouldnt it be better to have it somewhere under the truck not near anything hot? Is it possible to put it just off the tank? I guess it could drip on exhaust which would be the same idea but is it done in engine bay just for convenience?
thanks |
