Re: paint job costs
I think you are in the game depending on the extent of the body work.

Re: paint job costs
body work is minimal. needs one rocker and a few small patches in the floors and what not, I have all the sheet metal to do it. bed is very clean and I have it sitting in epoxy primer right now awaiting funds to do the job.

Make sure the second rocker doesn't need attention. Check the roof drip rail also. Pull the windshield. cheers JohnG |

Re: paint job costs
windshield is out, complete bare cab and front clip and all sheetmetal. I have a patch panel to be welded in by the drip rail, one rocker will need a replacement, and the other one could either be repaired or replaced, depending on what the body man thinks

Re: paint job costs
the bed is nearly perfect. the cab is where the attention is needed. I am starting to purchase rust free fenders, I already have two perfect doors that need nothing, other than a patch where a speaker was put in

Re: paint job costs
UI think price is also related to part of country you are in. My lil brothers does good amount of retro's and he is always amazed at what others can charge in other parts of country. He said he could never get by with those prices, well not if he wanted to work.Yes he does awsome work, don't tell him I said so.

Re: paint job costs
You are probably low. If your using quality paint products. A lot of colors are 3-5 hundred a quart of base. I had 6k in liquid cost in mine. A long bed truck in and out is a ton of paint.

Re: paint job costs
You should be safe at using $8k for your budget. Whatever you decide to spend put it in writing with the paint shop and instruct them NOT TO EXCEED that amount.

Re: paint job costs
Only one thing said here bothered me . How is this possible only one thing? One rocker needs repair. Please for the love of all things General Motors rip that rocker off to make sure there is not rust in the pillars starting. Also I have found that the inside of the door hide goodly amounts of the red stuff as well. I am not trying to scare anyone, my last intent I would hate to see you spent you hard earned money on your joy and then problems arise in short order. If your truck has none of these issues please excuse the ramblings. Jim

Re: paint job costs
Ok I hate posting on these kind of post. The reality is do you think 1 guy can do all the work to your truck in 2.5 weeks? 100 hours at $50 = 5k plus 2k in materials 7k. Then factor in just the time in the booth.
Mask and spray inside of cab almost a day. Paint all the jams bottom of hood and all misc parts prop min a day. Assemble cab mask it 2-tone paint 1.5 days. Install bed so you can match up 2-tone paint it 1 day. So you have the better part of a week in painting it. If you give it a quick sand and buff 2 days. ( driver quality) We now have 7 days in the paint work. $2800 just in the painting part. |

Re: paint job costs
$10-15,000 in this area minimum based on your description. Do as much prep work yourself to save money.

Re: paint job costs
You say most of its in epoxy primer...was it stripped to bare steel first? If its not or wasn't our shop wouldn't touch it. Most wont either we like to see it before anything has been done to it so you don't try to blame us for someone else sh*tty work.

Re: paint job costs
If you can get a quality two tone metallic bc/cc complete paint job for $6-7 k anywhere, you better jump on it.
Not trying to discourage you or beat a dead horse but it costs a bunch of cash for quality work and materials. I bet it takes a bunch of material to do a lwb inside and out. |

Re: paint job costs
the cab and front clip was soda blasted last year to bare metal. I then vinegar/water washed it and scrubbed it with scotch brite. then I sanded the whole surface to a clean metal and primered it.

I'm not a painter or expert on bodywork, but I have personally spent hundreds of hours on my own truck trying to make it as nice as I can. Taking every panel down to bare metal, then primer, bodywork, sanding more sanding, more sanding....painting.....more sanding, buffing. You get the picture. I totally understand why it costs so much. |

Re: paint job costs
i just spent $7900 to paint this truck $1000 to replace floor pans.i still have to finish the interior and trim and its not a show truck job .so plan on $12k to $15k for show quailty paint alone.

Re: paint job costs
I just posted a question or rant to cost on the 60-66 page. I thought 7-8K was excessive so went and spent 2K on tools and material and have since put in 200+ hours with 200 more to go minimum. Obviously I am learning so am not as fast, a body guy could do what I did in 50-80 hours but at a 50.00 an hour shop rate that is still 2500-4000.00. I don't blame the body guy, I won't work for free so don't expect anyone else to. I think these rates are going nowhere but up , I just don't know who will drop 10K to paint an old truck. Maybe I need to load parts on trailer and head to a cheaper part of the country.

Re: paint job costs
Depends on what makes you happy and how much mud work there really is. Your price is a good starting place.

Re: paint job costs
Fwiw, my 72 is in much the same condition you described. It isn't a rust bucket, but has the original paint and rust repair needed around the windshield and back glass. To bead blast the whole truck to the bare metal, epoxy primer, repairs, body work, two new rockers and then paint inside/out I was quoted $12,000. This by the best quality paint/body man I know.
