starter motor

I have gotten to the point of installing the starter motor on the new engine. the one I bought is from Napa. When I look up the part number they sold me it says the starter is for an automatic transmission as well as a manual transmission.

The problem is that the snout won't fit into tho opening on the bell housing. Has anyone else run into this situation? Any answers? Please help!!

Re: starter motor

Are you mounting to the bellhousing or to the block? Which flywheel do you have? There are 2 different tooth counts, which require 2 different starters.

Re: starter motor

I am trying to mount to the block. The newer engines from Chevy allow either the straight or staggered bolts starter to go in. The flywheel is a 168 tooth one.

The motor goes up and in only about 75 % of the way. It's as if the snout is too big for the opening.

Re: starter motor

Thats a weird one. I have the original bell from a 3-speed in my truck, and I currently have a high torque mini starter that mounted up perfectly. Previously I had the bellhousing mounted starter and that was easy also.

Is it possible they gave you the wrong part? I've had that happen before---right box wrong part.

Re: starter motor

It's possible I guess. I looked at the Napa website at all of the starters they list for that truck. The ones they show for manual transmissions look like the snout is smaller and they bolt to the bell housing.

I am trying to go back to a somewhat stock configuration. This truck was originally an inline six (250 ci) and was converted to a 350. When I bought the truck it had a smaller than stock starter in it. I am going to try and slide that one into place tonight and will compare the smaller one to the stock one. I am getting the feeling the snout is smaller on the aftermarket unit.

If I have to I'm going back to Napa in the morning for a refund or exchange.

Re: starter motor

All of the 3 speed trucks i have had mounted the starter to the bellhousing, not the block. The manual trans starters ar ediffsrent from auto starters. The manual rans starterea have a smaller snout to fit in the hole.

I guess I dont follow why you are replacing the starter. Is the one you have giving you trouble? Personally, i subscribe to the "if it aint broke, dont fix it" lifestyle.

Re: starter motor

WIDESIDE72

The starter that came on the truck is an aftermarket one that was installed by a previous owner. He cut all kinds of wires to make it work and in doing so, made that amp gauge inoperative. I want to go back to using the stock gauges so the wiring needs too be stock.

I'll simply buy the correct starter motor...

Thank you for the input!

Re: starter motor

If it has the cast iron bell housing with the opening at the bottom you must use the starter that bolts to the bell housing.
