fuel filter question

i'm running a Ls1 in my 55 shortbed. i've installed a custom underbed tank, the old tank used a normal inline fuel filter #6 flares. it laid horizontal then made a loop around back to the fuel pump. is there any reason the filter cant be installed in a vertical position? or should it always be laying horizontal? it just doesnt fit the way it used to.

As long as the filter is installed in the correct direction to fuel flow I would say that it will not matter if you mount it vertically or horizontally.
