315/75R/16's on 6" dually rims?

Tall and skinny tires are getting harder to find these days for my one ton 4x4.
315/75r/16's look "tall" enough, but will they fit on the 6" wide dual type rims? Any pictured of them installed to look at? Note: If the rear duals will rub together, they can be spaced out and run as singles if need be.....

315 is ungodly wide for two dually wheels theres no way it would fit on a 6 inch wheel. 10 inch is the recommend for 315s.

I've run 315/75/16's on a 7" wide wheel before with no issues at all. I wouldn't do it on a 6" wide wheel though.

I wouldn't run 315/75s on anything under 8". I can't imagine what spacers and studs it would take to do those tires on a dual rear. You can get 35/10.50 BFG A/Ts if you must have 35s. I'd look into 255/85s,pretty close to the old 9.00-16s we used to run on dual rear K30s. 315/75s are 35/12.50s. That's 25" of section width plus the space between.

I ran 315s on my 05 cummins dually with 2 inch spacers between them in the rear. They wear the centers a little more but nothing crazy I would do it again on my next dually.

they will wear out like crazy in the center that skinny i did 265s on a 6.5 and it killed them in the center.

If 315/75s (35/12.50) will work with 2" spacer then I guess 35/10.50s wouldn't need spacer,right? Makes me wonder why we needed needed custom spacers & studs for 9.00-16 bias ply tires that don't bulge like radials. Either way,why run a 12.50 wide tire when 10.50s are available...which will work far better on 6" rims. 12.50 on a rim less than 1/2 as wide? I'll pass.

even then there going to wear funny. you can get wider dually wheels if you need though.

With a 2" spacer in the rear. Tight fit, but worked out on 16x6.5" Alcoas.

Not "like crazy" but yes they will wear faster in the center, especially if you run them at full pressure all the time. If they are kept at a modest pressure when unloaded, and only aired up when loaded down the wear is not that crazy. Mine actually have quite a flat tread profile and even wear at 50psi on the front and 45psi rear.

The tall sidewall height is quite forgiving on the width difference. With a shorter sidewall the difference would be more pronounced, say on a set of 305/70s.

I've never come across 35/10.5 BFGs for a 16, but I do agree both 255/85R16 and 9.00-16s are great choices for tall skinny tires.


But since this thread is about 315s

I run 315/75R16s on my K30. They wear great at the pressure I have them at. I only air them up extra when I am going to be loading heavy (you can look at the DOT tire load inflation tables or do a chalk test to see what you actually need to run vs running the max pressure). At 60psi or so there is some noticeable crowning.

I am running 2.5" spacers between the duals. I had previously ran 1.5" spacers between 285s with room to spare, but with the 315s they would kiss when mounted. I didn't feel comfortable with that so I went to 2.5". I can fit my hand between them at that width. I could have gotten away with 2", but it would have still been too close for comfort. A set of 315 AT's may be able to get away with 2" if they don't have as aggressive sidewall tread blocks as my MTs have.

In reference to 77DWH's comment about 2" spacers on his Dodge, the factory Dodge wheels actually have about 1/4" more offset on each wheel than GM factory wheels, so they would have about 1/2" total more space between the duals to start with.

As you can see on those two pictures, of course there is significant sidewall ballooning, but the tread profile does not suffer from crowning too bad. In fact I had much more noticeable crowning with my 285s on these wheels than the 315s.

This was the rear when I test fitted with 1.5" spacers. Obviously not going to work.


I don't have any good head on shots like that with the 2.5" spacers to see daylight between them, but this is with 2.5" spacers.

Here is a couple pictures I saved, this guy had his stock steel wheels rehopped with 8" wide wheels. If I had a set of stock wheels I'd consider doing this but I started out with 16.5s so I jumped on a set of aluminum wheels on craigslist instead.

my 04 wore 265s out in the center with a 6.5 wide rim at 50 psi. i do drive pretty fast and pretty long distances. they wore slick in the center in about 10-15k miles.

I only have about 10k miles on these 315s on my dually so I don't have enough wear on that to make a definitive statement on those, though the 4 on the rear had 25k miles on them when I purchased them (those 25k were on 7.5" wide OEM H3 wheels), the front two were brand new, so the fronts have 10k and the rears 35k. Wear is pretty even. My 01 had 45k on 285 BFG MTs on 6.5" stock wheels. When I removed them there was about 1/8" tread in the middle and 1/4" tread on the outers, I feel that was an acceptable difference in wear. I ran 60 psi front and 50 rear on that one.
