700R4: First and reverse
are all I have. Transmission will not upshift. It's the stock 85 tranny that has 35k miles on local professional rebuild. I have routinely changed fluid and filter. Fluid is red and does not smell burnt. The TV cable is adjusted properly. There is no hesitation going into drive or reverse from park or neutral.
Someone please tell me it's something simple such as the servo.

In drive or overdrive, does it just not shift like it is in 1st or does it refuse to shift and make noises/vibrations anything strange?

It simply refuses to shift. No strange noises or vibrations. Ran it all the way up to 4k rpm in od position. When I let off the gas, engine returns to idle. Rev it up again it will still pull in first gear.

I don't think it is a problem with the torque converter or it locking up because is would run rough. Sounds like your tranny simple went south. Sorry.

It could possible be some dirt in the valve body. Sorry Dude

Sounds like you might have a stuck throttle valve or governor. Try winding it up to about 3000 or so and see if it will manual shift out of first and second and so on. You may have also lost all the teeth on your governor gear, that's a common problem with them.
Let me know what you find.

Talked to the tranny rebuild man. He said broken gears are not uncommon. He, as well as others have advised to leave the old gear, don't worry about it as it will go nowhere and cause no problems, and install the new gear. Everything should be fine. I'll do this within the next couple days and let ya'll know how it turns out.
Too bad I didn't know about this before the expensive tow - 89 miles from home and stranded. I am also wondering how many tranny shops would would be honest enough to simply replace this gear as opposed to charging for a full rebuild! Just a thought, if so these forums have saved me a lot! Thanks everyone maybe I can return the favor by helping someone in the future.
