Substitute Chassis

Been trying real hard to find parts for the 4 wheel drive system on my 61 K10. Especially the front. Not having a lot of luck. Been thinking of putting the body onto a newer chassis, mainly because parts will be easier to locate.

I have a 61 K10 Long Step Side. A co worker offered to sell me his 84 Suburban chassis, but the wheelbase is 2" longer than my K10.

Any ideas as to which chassis would work for this swap? This is my first so I'm looking to the experts for advise.

Re: Substitute Chassis

You should be able to mount up the front and rear axles to your truck with very little work.
That way you keep your frame with the original VIN.

are you wanting to put an original setup in there or are you wanting to go for newer axles with disc brakes.

Re: Substitute Chassis

I would like to keep things as original as possible but finding hubs for the front axel has proven to be near impossible. I do like the idea of just changing the axles as apposed to changing the entire chassis. The widths if the frames appear to be the same, so the axles should fit pretty easily.

Re: Substitute Chassis

so you have the frt end stuff minus the hubs(locking hubs or the hub itself[piece which holds the bearings]). what are you doing for transfer case and it's mounting?
what are your intentions with this truck. you want a stock 4 x 4 or you just want a 4 x 4?

Re: Substitute Chassis

The truck still has the original 4X4 system in it. The hub on the right side is broken and needs to be replaced. The locking hubs need replacing due to the fact that they are no longer there, so in essence, I need to replace most of the front running hub set up. It originally had the 283 in it but that has long since been removed and put into another vehicle. I have a 350 that I have been thinking of putting in it. First things first though. I want to get the chassis in running order again.

Re: Substitute Chassis

I need a kick. sorry I was thinking that you were trying to install a frt end. J.kirn a memeber here on the board may be able to help you. j.kirn
you can upgrade to the newer axles incorporating disc brakes etc. without much difficulty.
will mount to your frt springs and you would have to move the spring pads on the rear axle to do that. I did install 3/4t axles under my 64 4 x 4 panel 20 years ago.
then you can up grade brakes and p/s. see capt fab for a fw mounting parts and your done

Re: Substitute Chassis

I don't think its that hard to find parts for this. My Chevrolet parts book shows the Lockouts to be the same 1960-1972 although I know there were different styles . They should interchange with many years then. If you read this post on this truck http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=610656 you will notice the front hubs were changed and the originals are in a box in the back. If you need help with part numbers Im willing to look them up to check interchangeability between years. The actual Hub that the wheel bolts on I see theres a few different ones. Bearings and such shouldn't be to difficult . If theres some guys on here that have rebuilt original units please chime in. From what Im seeing these 4X4 trucks have more value original than modified.

Re: Substitute Chassis

J.Kirns has a nice one.
there is also quite a bit if interchangeability between the manufacturers in these years also. remember a long time ago in my 64 I snapped off a frt spindle in the middle of nowhere and managed to hitchhike back about 15 miles to where there was an autowrecker and told him what I was looking for and he gave me one off a jeep and it worked. it was amazing that a circlip held everything on as I was travelling at about 60mph

I have a Superior interchange manual for light trucks and it shows the hubs as interchangeable between 60 and 65. I also have a factory assembly manual. The part that the wheel bolts to is what I have been looking for. I can find them for the C10 pickups all day long, just not the K10. If you have a source for them, I sure could use the help.

Saw the pics of those hubs. That is exactly what I'm looking for.

Re: Substitute Chassis

If you end up locating the original parts, then great.
But if you end up switching over to the newer front and rear, I'd keep the original parts if you have the room for storage.
That way if you do decide to sell your truck or do an original restore, you'd still have the original equipment.

Re: Substitute Chassis

KTSK10,

You can get all the parts for your front & rear diff. You'll just have to shop around a bit.
Here's a couple to get you started.
1. http://www.bjsoffroad.com
2. http://walcks4wd.com

Also posting here and the other forum in the want to buy section will usually get you results.

Just be patient and having part #'s really helps to make sure your getting parts that will fit. Also, the locking hubs will show up on ebay eventually. I bought a set at half the price, but had to keep looking for about 2 months.

Re: Substitute Chassis

Mitch, Thanks for the web sites. Couldn't get the second one to open. The first one appears to specialize in Jeeps. I am not as knowledgeable as others when it comes to the Dana 44 axles. Is the Jeep Dana compatible with the Chevy? Saw one set of hubs sold in the classifieds section, but no others.

Re: Substitute Chassis

Yeah. The Jeep Gladiator 100 - for 1/2 ton and Gladiator 200 for 3/4 tons are the same DANA 44-5F.

try copying the link, I guess. Not sure why it didn't work for ya. I'll be on the lookout for a set of hubs and locking hubs for ya.

Re: Substitute Chassis

Mitch, you too have been a great help in finding hubs. You too, I send out a big THANK YOU!!!! Clyde65 reposted the website that would not go thru and it seemed to work fine. Not sure why. You guys seem to have a great knowledge of the Dana 44 Spicer axles and I think I can learn a lot from you both. Walcks lists hubs but refer to the Model 25 Axle. Is this compatible with the Dana 44 Spicer?

Actually, what I would do is call or email Tony at - http://4-5-6chevytrucks.com
He would be your best bet on locating your hubs.

My 62 K20's original lockers were pretty rough shape. I used some Spicer lockers off a 70 K20 doner. The 1/2 ton trucks should be the same as well.

The lockers are only half of what I'm looking for. I need the hubs and the lockers. Trying to stay as original as possible and If I can't do that, then I'll move on to other options. Thank You for the suggestion.
