67gmc 250il6 - starter bolt

i removed the starter on my 67 gmc with the 250 inline six engine and 4-speed trans.

after i removed the lowest of the three bolts, i realized that whatever it was threaded into before isn't there anymore. looks as though it may have fallen off into the bellhousing.

what is the proper setup here? what happened?

i have a 69 CHEVY inline 6,4speed.....i have a clear view of my pressure plate,(no rock shield) the 2 bottom bolts screw in towards the rear of the truck into the bellhousing,,,,the top bolt screws in towards the front of the truck and goes thru the bellhousing, and screws into the starter housing,,,,,i dont know if gmc & chevy mount the same,,,,(need a 2nd opinion),,,but maybe the bolt your talking about somehow screws into the shield that i dont have,,,,,,,, jeff

the setup you describe is as on my truck. the two lower bolts screw towards the back of the truck into the bellhousing, and the one on top goes towards the front.

i'm not sure what the rock shield looks like, but where this lower bolt goes in, instead of threads it is just a thin bit of sheet metal with a hole in it. Seems like there might have been a captive nut or something?

I am just trying to find out what is supposed to be there, which i would assume is threads into the bellhousing.
