The hinge pin must press out one way or the other but not sure which way. Name: image.jpg

Ok, I just realized that the pictures on that post are gone. I'll have to retake them and repost. I'll try to get them done ASAP.
Sorry for the tease

Re: How do I get belt buckle apart?

Now that I look back at your original post, I don't think my write up will help. Mine was for the plastic cover type, which is different than the '67 belts. Sorry.

Ya, I found that post or at least one like it for 68-72's, but can't find anything on 67's. I'm sure I could get it apart with a little force, but putting it back together when painted & re-chromed might not work out too well.

Re: How do I get belt buckle apart?

I wouldn't swear to it, but I'd be willing to bet the metal casing is bent in a press after the unit is assembled to prevent the mechanism from coming apart. NTSB regulations and whatnot. You could build a jig on a car jack to open it a bit and then press the sides back together, but you'd have to retemper the steel as bending it back and forth will most like cause fatigue.
Good luck.

Re: How do I get belt buckle apart?

That's kinda what I was thinking I would have to do. I'm not sure i could get it bent back without cracking or at least scratching the chrome not to mention a freshly painted top.

Re: How do I get belt buckle apart?

You could try a bench vice with a thick piece of leather on the sides unless you have one without teeth. It'll probably try to come shooting out, though. Just buff out the scratches when you're done so long as it's not gouged... If that's how GM did it 40 years ago, it should work fine

Re: How do I get belt buckle apart?

Thanks, I didn't actually have to tweak the chrome base I just pushed the pin out a little from the side with the wedge in it the I pulled the buckle up (with a little force) then drove the pin back the other way. Putting it back together without scratching it will be more of a challenge. The adjustment pin I filed the corner VERY slightly on one side then drove it out with a punch. That will make sense when your trying to get one apart.

Re: How do I get belt buckle apart?

I got buckles back from getting re-chromed. Got 1 back together, scratched the other So I'll repaint it & try again.
