LS Motor Position

Im working on a 1972 Turbo 5.3 and would like to know what extra room can be had using offset motor mounts. (between pulleys and radiator)

DD has the adjustable ones
Jegs sells 2in back for half the price.
Engine as far back as possible would be ideal.

Big favor but could you guys check on firewall to engine clearances before I buy the wrong thing.

Currently the truck has SBC frame perches, BeCool 3 core and twin electric fans.

One missing question: How much sledgehammer or Sawzall work are you willing to do to the firewall?

Overall, an LS motor is about an inch shorter than a regular SBC.

I would suggest moving the sb engine stands back a set of holes on the frame, (give you 2 1/2" setback). You will need to drill the bottom hole on ea side. a set of carshop inc. 1" setback plates #CSP2370, @ $59.99, should set you as close to the stock firewall as you will want to go? Prothane #7-509 mounts ,will work with that ($86.99 through Jegs). You can also slot the engine stands & the trans crossmember, to give a little adjustment , as needed. On my app, I did include a set of Moroso engine mount shims...about $40, through a local speed shop. Down on the 4 th or 5th page, there are pics of my swap, that will show how close the engine fits in I 6 spot, but 1" forward (where I am trying to set you, by moving the sb stands rearward). Take a look @ the pics, & if you have any questions , on what I have not added/forgotten...fire away Best of fun, Longhorn

I used Dirty Dingo sliders and CPP perches. I have my engine about as far back as you can put it. I didn't do any hammering or sawsall work.

Gonna try the cheaper way first as suggested by Longhorn.

I bought the metal stock today and it was the same cost as Carshop Inc.
so... ordered those too.

I6 location and 1in back. Hope the AC compressor still fits in the frame.

I don't think you will find the ac compressor to fit the frame , with that mount/ bracket set up? I think the mount /spacer will need to be modded on the RH side, for compressor clearance....or an aftermarket bracket set, to mount the compressor in a higher spot. I am sure that some of the others will "chime in" on that one, as I do not run AC ? Longhorn

HI Windsma, do as i did, used the organ donor truck mounts and make your own frame brackets. I used trailblazer compressor down low on passenger side using trailblazer bracket to block. Only issue is the lower 2 bolts go through compressor and bracket into upper edge on oil pan. trailblazer pan is odd, as front axle goes through it so modding the ac bracket will work. Truck ac has suction/discharge left to right and some guys notch the frame for ac lines. I used the trailblazer compressor because the suction/discharge are in-line front to back and the blazer compressor is a little smaller so you don't need to notch the frame. If i was to do it all over the trailblazer has everything you need. The mounts look like hockey pucks and sit low and back so not in the way of anything, headers,etc,etc. I will be making up a CCOT (cycling clutch orifice tube) system like the trailblazer uses. I,m running clutch fan so electrical hook-up will be easier. Probably use 73-87 c10 evap core in my 68 ac box, r134 accumulator, trailblazer lines and trailblazer condenser. Good luck, Brian F.

Don't mean to hijack the thread but you wouldn't happen to have some pictures of this setup? I think it might be beneficial for everybody to see.

I was in the exact same boat as far as engine position. I know I want to go FI down the road so I mounted the engine quite far back using the DD mounts on 73-87 stands. There's no way the stock truck compressor fits down low, it hits the DD mounts and I think the frame rails.

Well i think my Delphi ac compressor is different than most.
I hope it will make it easier.. Im sure, with my luck, it wont.

Giving up on turbo for now.
I would rather have AC

I agree... Even the GF says Turbocharge it..

BUT..

Burlington NC. Last summer had several 100+ days

And GAA Classic Auction is March 7th.. (Old farts love AC not hair dryers)
I can't get everything done by then.

Doesnt sell for the number in my head... Ill come back to the turbo thing.

[IMG][/IMG] I modified the bracket. The lower left hand side and center bolt were added by me. I will be using the lowest open bolt holes for through bolts and nuts on the back side instead of the lower bolts originally threading into the side of the trailblazer oil pan. i just installed 98-02 camaro/firebird oil pan and didn't want to weld onto the side of the pan so i modified the bracket instead
