What year 350 engine

I have a 1969 Chevy C10, and I am trying to find out what year 350 engine is in it. I know it is not the original engine. Also, I am pretty sure it is newer than 69. I tried to find the serial number, but can't seem to find it. I saw online that it is on the drivers side near where the transmission bolts onto the block. I've looked everywhere that I have access to, but didn't see it.

I need to buy a new power steering pump, and so need to know what year to purchase it. The power steering pump in it currently is probably not the right one, as it has fitment issues.

For the best chance of identification there are 3 numbers to get.
The casting number, the engine ID number and the date code. Here is a pic of where they are all located.

There should be a pad with stampings,
forward of the pass. side head that'll tell you;
Plant, month, day, engine.
BUT the only year ID I know of on a SB chev is the casting # on the drivers side of the block by the bell housing that you mentioned,
You may have to scrap of old old, dirt etc

The actual engine won't matter, as long as it's 60's to 80's 350. What matters is what pulley set up was used. Does it have a short or long water pump? 67-72 trucks used a short water pump set up. 73+ used a long water pump set up. This changed the pulleys/brackets and their positions. Either set up is easily swappable, but for everything to work properly you need to use the correct water pump, brackets, and pulleys that were meant to work together.

So where the engine vin code on the front like shown on that picture, there weren't any numbers stamped on my engine. The back 2 numbers I cannot see because they are by the firewall.

The truck has a long water pump. I just bought a new crankshaft pulley, power steering pump pulley and brackets. They all list the dates for fit from the late 60s-80s, with a long water pump. Also, I was searching Advance Auto Parts for the power steering pump, and the pumps are different for pre-1969, for 1972 and for 1975.

Take a small digital camera and aim it down at that area of the back on the engine. It might take several tries but usually you can get a readable shot of the casting numbers if they aren't covered in grease.
As 67Chevyredneck said it doesn't matter all that much as a 350 is a 350 and parts interchange.
The differences will be if it is a 2 or 4 bolt main block, what heads it has on it and what cam and pistons came with it. along with the short/long water pump thing.

The block could be from a target motor (crate motor) that was put in at one time and not stamped or someone could have decked the block during a rebuild and ground the numbers off.

Good point, look on the right (DS) of the motor either just before or just behind the motor mount and see if there is a metal tag there, if so, it could be a rebuild or a crate.

It's correct for them to say everything "will fit", because it will, however for it to "fit right" everything needs to be matched to a LWP set up.
