Extra Bolster for Buddy Buckets

Hey doods. I've been rollin a set of tattered 67-68 buddy buckets in my 64 for a few months and it's (well beyond) time to recover them.

I'd like to add some bolstering to the seat bottom and back when I replace the covers. I've been considering two options:
  1. Buy 67-68 truck foams and add foam to the desired bolster areas.
  2. Buy another type of seat's foam and trim to fit.

For option 2 I have been looking at these Chevelle Sport foams.

Has anyone done or seen anything similar?

Re: Extra Bolster for Buddy Buckets

frizzle if you ask me the dodge seats have more of a bolster than the chevys.
the first set has a differnt shape than the second but these are both built on the same frames as the chevy seats...both of these were a $20. jy score

Any real auto trim upholstery shop can easily shape your seats any way you want them also build you any type custom covers, add embroidery or anything else your heart desires as far as you want to go from MILD TO WILD ! Forming custom bolsters requires the correct foam and Glue and NO you can't use spray can glue and expect it to last .They will build new foam using your current foam in your seats as the base ,DON'T BUY NEW FOAM YOU DON'T NEED IT !!!

Frizzle Fry, I had these seats tucked. The way they are tucked and padded make these seats extremely comfortable. I sold these to Jeh ( Jason ) on the forum last year.

Re: Extra Bolster for Buddy Buckets

I'd also recommend new seat bottoms because the old cushions disintegrate and make a nice big mess under the seat.

Hmmmm... I actually have a set of the D100 buckets as well. They need foam too. Wonder if it's actually different and if so where to find it..? (a quick google came up empty, but I'll search more).

Yeh, it's only money, right? I'm not opposed to paying for quality, but for this project I'd like to stick to DIY to avoid paying more than I need to. I can get the covers for <$300 and would like to keep the whole deal under $600. I like the factory look, but sometimes they just look a bit flat.

BTW, I've used Scotties in the past and they do good work.

The extra cushion around the outside of the seat top and bottom.

Re: Extra Bolster for Buddy Buckets

Adding the insert in the middle of the seat allowed me to have them tucked and not make the extra foam look like a oversize recliner like some seats do

Re: Extra Bolster for Buddy Buckets

You can't increase the size of the bolster without increasing the size of the covers , so you would have to have custom seat covers made to change anything other than the stock look ,You can't shove 10 pounds of foam into a 5 lb bag , Believe me I have been self employed building custom interiors for 35 years , I just did a set of buddy buckets for my neighbor with repairing all the foam and custom made covers using Allante simulated leather and he paid $400.00 so you should be able to get what you want for less than $600.00 and have them professionally done , The foam in buddy buckets encapsulates the frame work your not just going to pull off the covers and lift out the foam and drop in new foam , it rarely has to be replaced and is easily added to to get the look you desire ,all it takes is a phone call you may be surprised at the cost ? If you were closer I'd build them for you Cheap ! i will walk next door and get a picture of his reupholstered seats and post it shortly .

Re: Extra Bolster for Buddy Buckets

Here are a few pictures of the seats I recovered for my neighbor , and I have to thank you for your posting because While I was there he showed me 2 more sets he found and I traded him a set in exchange for reupholstering the second set he had extra , So score one for Grumpy ! He also just bought the blue '68 short bed and it has buckets in it that I will soon recover for him .

Re: Extra Bolster for Buddy Buckets

I also wrapped his door panels in allante and made him a set of visors stitched with the orange thread to match , Even buddy seats with foam damage like this can be repaired without replacing the foam.

Re: Extra Bolster for Buddy Buckets

As mentioned,if you change the cushions the original covers won't work. I plan custom upholstery,so will make cushions to fit that plan.Depending on cost,I'll either modify (add foam/shape) or just go with custom cushions all the way. The design I have in mind isn't all that different from the '68 style, with bolster around outer edges. I'll cross that bridge when I get there.Prolly run as is,like you,for a long time

All the factory style seat covers I've ever used didn't have a stamp, but they were made in the USA. I'm not sure, but the El Cheapo ill fitting economy covers sold by LMC are probably made overseas. If not,I don't know what their excuse is.

About the same years as these GM trucks...but probably more than 67/68. Dodge ran the same body 61-71,but the seats I'm sure didn't run from start to finish.

Thanks S.K. I've had it for a long time, but haven't been active on this part of the board for about the same amount of time

Good stuff guys! Thanks for the inspiration.

Grumpy, you rock That is some solid work you do. Can you offer any details about the foam and glue you use to repair existing foam?

I've been looking at PUI Interiors stuff which is all made in the US.

Re: Extra Bolster for Buddy Buckets

any foam and fabric store will have many different densities of foam in block form , just buy a 3'' thick firm block say maybe 4'x4' should cost less than $15.00 to cut it to size you can buy any electric carving knife from walmart for $8.00 to rough it out then use a 90 degree angle grinder and a roloc scotch brite 2inch pad to fine tune your bolsters , you want to use a commercial grade contact cement (glue ) ace hardware sells it in quarts /gallons it's called weldwood contact adhesive and you want to use the landau top grade about $30.00 a gallon you don't need more than a quart at the very most (vinyl top ) grade you can spray it thru any cheap /harbor freight spray gun at 75-90 psi /Or brush it on .If you can't find that any home depot CONTACT grade laminate(counter top ) adhesive will work as long as you allow flash time before attaching pieces . once your happy with your bolsters spray each side of the ajoining foam and WAIT 3-5 MINUTES then set in place and once attached you can fine tune them using the angle grinder , make them all match and take it to Scottie's and let him cover them ! Ask about Allante vinyl looks like leather ,feels like leather, never cracks /fades/or shrinks And if he wants to charge too much send them to me and I will reupholster them for the cost of materials and shipping !I'm retired I already made my money !
