1973 Mercedes-Benz 280 SEL 4.5

So the Blazer is nearing completion (see link in signature) and I started thinking about what else I "needed". I'l have the K5 and the Harley, and I sold my 4 door beater Impala. I need to replace it with something cool to cruise in but still be a people mover... Why not a calssic S Klasse Mercedes. I settled on the last year of this body style, called the W108 chassis. I was the beginning of the S Class Mercedes, 280SEL with the L being a long wheelbase adding 4" to the rear passenger legroom. This model was only one lower then the 300SEL with the major difference being the 300SEL had factory air suspension and the minor difference being the type of wood used in the interior.

The engine in the car is a 4.5L v8 (M117.984) with Bosch D-Jetronic fuel injection producing 221 Hp and 276 ft lbs of torque. Its mated to a 3 speed automatic transmission. It cam standard wiht 4 wheel disc brakes and an "independant" rear suspension.

Below are the pictures from when I went to look at the car. The final picture is the goal.... Rebuild motor, trans and mechanicals, add in a interior and exterior color change...

And here is the goal .. Anthracite Grey with Red Leather interior...

Here is the whole story so far on the Benz World site ...

That is the first thing I thought of when I saw the pics. I guess you may want to drive it a bit first.

edit- I went and looked at your thread over at benzworld. I think you are on the right track- do the LS swap. Nothing about the original engine looks inexpensive to work on. It would be a total sleeper too.
