Transfer case problem !
Hi guys, New to the forum
Need your help I'm from Saudi Arabia and here sometime people sell their car just because they couldn't get parts for the cars and I'm trying to buy it online I have Chevy k30 1983 and the problem is that when i use the 4WD Hi or Lo the 4WD seems to disengage and engage in less than a second and it every 10s or less sometimes more and if I'm clamping a sand it get worse like I stopped the truck so I need your help guys a link would be great |

I would look at the locking hubs on the front axle.
that is an NP205 transfer case. it would be really weird that it would pop out of gear. if the locking hubs have been installed wrong or are internally damaged you could get an engagement issue. welcome aboard! |

ABDO- Looking at the transfer case I can see you have the syncronized version of the np205 and your problem is probally in your problematic automatic locking hubs I would install manual hubs which are a bolt on swap and very easy to do and come by. They should be for a internal spline , dana 60 front w/30 spline outer axle shaft.77'-91' 30-35 series.
The only difference is you will have to get out and lock them in when you need front axle assistance!

Doubleclucker, educate me please. how do you tell it is the synchro version. i can see that it is pre-85 but i dont know how to see that its synchro.

The big aluminum cover is different. The bump in the middle is aluminum. On the other cover you can see the back of the bearing steel cage. If you look close you can see an 83. That's the first year of the synchronized front output.
I could be wrong!!! |

do these ones have the 4wd switch for the light and the slip joint rear? Does that mean you can put it in 4wd while moving?

If you drove the truck in 4Hi with the hubs in the "free" position, it would engage the front driveshaft but not send power to the front wheels (you need to lock the hubs AND have it in 4wd for that). It would be just like driving in 2Hi except you might get slightly worse gas mileage.

it appears as though the front output is sending power to the axle. somewhere in the axle is a gremlin. first step would be to check the hubs. i cant tell if the front axleshafts are spinning from the video. if they are, i would blame the hubs.
to install manual hubs, just pull the auto hubs out and install the manual ones. removing hubs is pretty basic, but if you are in need of direction, i can try to post some pics if i can find them. running the hubs locked and case in 2hi is no real concern if all moving parts in the front axle are in good order. the tires will drive the axle and cause everything to spin. running with the hubs unlocked in 4wd is the same only in reverse. the transfer case will drive the axle, but not the wheels. so either is mechanically OK as long as the moving parts are in working order. |

I might've of missed this somewhere but has it actually been proven he has auto hubs? I don't see any pictures and the video doesn't show anything but i dunno maybe i missed it somewhere. Assuming you have autos try this website i use it quite a bit.
https://www.4wdfactory.com/store/cat...e-Flange-Kits/ but if amazon or somewhere has better prices by all means use them lol If you look under warn premiums the notes for a GM say if your coming from an auto hub you have to change spindle nuts although i can't verify this somewhere here should be able to. On a side note when installing the hubs if you get them don't pack them full of grease, personally i let mine soak in atf and they work great but everyone does it a little different.

WOW ABDO first reply back since feb! please keep us informed as we all can learn from threads like this.
The 38826 hubs are great replacements for whatever you have and is all you need. I dont recommend driving around in 4HI or 4LO without the manual hubs locked in(engaged), as there is no bearing in the manual hub itself and any differences in rotation from the axleshaft to the hub will cause premature wear since the hubs are usually lubed with lighter oils like MR. 250r suggests not wheel bearing grease. Driving around with the manual hubs engaged is perfectly fine in 2HI. FYI- the spindle nut(s) from the rear 14 bolt can be used on the front dana 60; so you can have 1 special socket for both front and rear axles.

So today I took it apart
This is What I found this piece of metal in the last pic was missing in the other side !! maybe this is what caused the problem ? BTW this piece fell down accidentally and I don't know how to put it back =) and I should mention that when reversing in 4HI or 4LO the front wheel works fine !!
