Door jamb switches

What has worked best for dome light/jamb switches and lighting delays in the AD trucks ? I've reshaped a '99 surburban dome light fixture to fit the stock 51 location, and fit the '99s inside door marker lights into the lower door faces.

I used these. I chose them because they require only about 1/8th inch of clearance between the door and jam. Also, these are double pole switches which I needed for the courtesy lights I used.

Delay or Relay? I used a bosch type relay with the ground as the activator to each door switch so that opening either door turns on the courtesy lights. Can't remember if I included a switch to disable when I do not want them to come on, may have to add that. The dome runs off the stock light switch.

I want to use a delay, keep the courtesy interior lights on a little while after the doors close - at wifeys request.....since she 'bought' the truck !@!

Surprised that for $60 you only get 2.5 seconds delay and no adjustment? Better be fast finding the belts and key hole....

I just did a quick search...not sure what else is out there...would be better for dome light to fade off when ignition key is turned on.

I put a toggle switch in my dashboard so I ( or my passenger ), can easily turn on the dome light while the doors are closed. I probably could have used a black knob switch to match the wiper knob, but the toggle switch looks custom, like it might control something more exciting than the dome light LOL

Which design of switch you use also depends on if you need to ground the circuit when the door is opened Which is what the switches that Brian, 57Chevyman and Russel showed or if you need to complete a hot circuit with the one that Orrie showed.

Most every older rig I worked on had the dome light switches going to ground. There was a hot wire running to the light and then a ground wire ran from the light to both doors so the circuit grounded when you opened the door or grounded when you used the switch on the light.

If you wanted to run a hot wire to the pushbutton switch on the door and then run a wire to the light and then ground the light you would use a two pole in and out switch.

The NAPA switches in my post are double pole switches. The contacts close when the door opens. The hot wire goes to one side of the switch and the other side goes to the courtesy light which is grounded through it's housing. They use push in bullet connectors.

I had looked thru all the ads I found and guess I missed that one - I did find one made in Oz for about $16US delivered, and it's is adjustable 5 to 60 seconds. So we'll see if it's any good....

My '51 has a bulb location in the ignition switch mount, so I will use the delay for that and small courtesy lamps over the kick panels, the dome light can go off when the doors close.

The DEI528T is a good reliable piece, I've used a few of them in various applications over the years.
