Alternator and power steering pulley/brackets

I am trying to figure out how to piece together the power steering and alternator and all the pulleys. I think the problem is that I don't have a long water pump?

The engine is the gen 1 small block 70 something-80 something. I am trying to bolt up he 1976 Camaro ps pump. And make it play nice with the rest of the pulleys.

Re: Alternator and power steering pulley/brackets

Are you using the stock front V8 mounts to mount your engine, it looks like it in your picture. What brackets do you plan on using to mount your alternator and power steering?

Re: Alternator and power steering pulley/brackets

I found if you use the stock front mounts you have (should?) use a long water pump with the bracket for the ps bracket. I went thru quite a process with different pulley set ups and found the crank and waterpump come in matched pairs, depending on number of grooves and if it is short/long. The offset and diameters are different so you cannot mismatch. Look at my build post 506 for details, that is when I was figuring out the brackets.

Here are three photos showing how I mounted mine. The PS bracket pivots on the water pump, I made the adjustment bracket that mounts to the exhaust manifold. The alternator mounts on a rams horn manifold with the stock generator bracket modified with angle stock to get forward adjustment. The tension arm was made from two shorter brackets, I wanted it out away from the valve cover. I completely fabed the AC bracket to mount off the water pump and passenger exhaust manifold brackets. The PS runs off the pulley closest to the engine, water pump and alternator off of the middle with the PS acting as an idler, AC runs off the outer bottom and water pump pulley.

Another reason I made mine is that it seems to me that all of the aftermarket stuff is way to bulky and ends up being the dominate thing you see.

Re: Alternator and power steering pulley/brackets

Your pic two shows the bracket for mounting to the long water pump. The pump has a cast part with a hole that the two bracket ears mount on. If you need a casting number or pic let me know.

Re: Alternator and power steering pulley/brackets

Orrie, thanks for the pictures! Those are helping a lot. It helps me understand what it should look like.

I am not using the front motor mounts, I just have them on right now to support the engine in on a wheel around dolly.

I will have headers on there too... So looks like I might have to go buy a new long water pump? And I don't have that bracket that goes behind the ps pump. I'm not going to lie, I'm a little frustrated with these pulleys and mounts.

Re: Alternator and power steering pulley/brackets

Anyone have luck with this bad boy? It needs the long water pump also. It looks like it mounts on passenger side. Would that screw me up if I put a/c on the truck later?

Re: Alternator and power steering pulley/brackets

That's actually not a bad picture. Thank you.

The more I look at this, the more parts I realize I need. This might be going off the deep end, but...has anyone pulled a whole serpentine setup from a junk yard and have luck bolting it up? Would it even bolt up?

I orginally had that type but moved the alt over to the driver side so the AC compressor lines did not have to run over or under the engine. Most aftermarket ac compressors mount on the passenger side for our trucks. later model mount on the driver side. Yes I know your frustration, I have a shelf full of different pulleys I paid for with assurances they would work. I finally got a matched set from Kustombrad that worked. I did an internet search and found (but apparantly did not keep) a link to a stock class racing site that had all the info because they run over or under diameter pulleys to keep from over reving the alternator and water pumps.

Re: Alternator and power steering pulley/brackets

So I just went and picked up a long water pump. (A lot cheaper than I was expecting, $18.90 with promo codes. I also bought that chrome alt bracket that Starterman has, with a two grove water pump pulley for LWP. I hope it all matches up when I go to bolt it on. The only thing I need to figure out is that mount behind the power steering pump, typically mounting to the header bolts. If I can't find anything, I will try and fab something up. Anyone with pics of that ares would help out...

Look at the pic in my post below. I modified one that was on one of the pumps I had laying around, but it is just a simple angle with two holes, one for the exhaust bolt, one for the back adjustment slot. Starterman's blue engine uses the bracket that mounts to the head with the front adjustment arrangement.
