Rear Glass Question

On my project, its getting close to time to re-install the rear glass and the new windshield.

As I was cleaning the old tint off the rear glass and getting it ready to install I noticed something different. The rear glass doesnt appear to be Safety Glass--it is plate glass of the correct thickness.

Has anyone ever noticed this? Is this the way they were made- Or, is this someones way of trying to same money?

It should be safety glass.having put my head through one about thirty years ago, I can attest to what came stock. BTW, I also tested the windshield glass about 45 years ago. The glass didn't hold me, but thankfully I didn't dent grandpa's hood on my way out!

I think the terms are getting confused. The back glass is a tempered glass. Drop it and it goes into tens of thousands of tiny pieces but not glass shards, as you think of say in a home mirror or similar. The Windshield is laminated glass it would be a sheet of glass a sheet of plastic and another sheet of glass on top kinda like a glass and plastic sandwich.We have all seen the yellowing of the windshield around the edges and that is the plastic lamination getting air to it and it is getting loose from the glass on its ends. The Back glasses should be the same type glass that the door glass is made of. I think that is the correct explanation of that. Jim

Exactly! I didn't catch that, but I was focused on the plate glass question. It has no place in a truck.

You should be able to identify the tempered glass by a "bug". The tempering bug is a small logo or mark that identifies it as tempered glass. A couple of other clues: there may be tong marks (little dimples) near one edge of the glass, and the edge of the glass is usually a little rounded from the tempering process.

Im not sure so far--I dont see any identifying marks or even a rounded/sanded edge.
Im not that far from the local glass shop, think Ill run it up there and see what they think.

if it is plate glass I would definitely get rid of it. It just seems too dangerous
