GM Serpentine Accessory Belt Drive System

Was wondering if anyone has used the GM Serpentine Accessory Belt Drive System. I have been thinking of using this system http://www.gmpartsdirect.com/results...umber=12497698 along with a 87 GM power steering gear box then completing the AC with a Vintage Air system. Anyone have any experience or coments about this accessory drive system or it's components? Thanks...Stroker

Here is the thread that Dean23 started a few weeks ago.

Keep in mind that if you have an 1987 or older block you will have to drill a hole in the passengers side cylinder head (scary) to anchor the bracket down correctly. I drilled the hole, tapped it, then installed a 3/8 stud with locktight. Mostly studs and a few bolts are exactly how the serp brackets are anchored down on later model trucks.

Thanks for the info guys. Dean23 that would be great. Please post or email the pics. Did the kit you use have the Secondary Air Injector pump? How do you go about deleting it, delete kit?? BTW Vintage Air tells me they have a number of customers integrating this GM accessory drive and compressor with their sure fit systems with good results. They offer the Sure fit kit without the compressor and bracket the only other mod is to change or use an adapter at the compressor end of the hose kit. Thanks again ..............Stroker

Stroker,

Not to steal the question away from Dean but as you can see by the picture below I used an idler below the A/C compressor and totally bypassed the smog pump area. In fact I had to cut some of the smog pump mounting portion of the bracket off to make clearance for the mechanical fuel pump. My brackets came directly off a totaled 1995 C1500 L05 350 back in 1996. I think I was the one of first guys to try adding factory GM serpentine bracketry to older engines 7 years ago.

If I were you I would not buy anything from GM Parts Direct as they will only screw you blue on freight which off sets any saving they give on the parts price. I have used GM Parts Direct twice….my first and last. I would just visit a local salvage yard and pirate all the parts from a 1993 through 1995 C/K truck with a 5.0L, 5.7L, or even a 4.3L V6 as they all used the same brackets then purchase a new water pump from any parts house. Stay away from pre 1993 serp brackets as they are a once peice stamped steel POS. With an R4 A/C compressor, p/s, and the 105 amp alternator the Dayco belt part number is 955K6.

As far as hooking up the A/C hoses, just pick up a hose assembly for a 1993 through 1995 C/K truck as well just for the sake of having the later header assembly. Then take the A/C hose to a hydraulic shop or any shop that specializes in fabricating A/C hoses and have them make new hoses for you onto the OEM header assembly. This will save you a heck of a lot of money doing as much on your own as you can without relying on the aftermarket companies.

When I dropped in my new 454HO a few months ago I used 2000 model year L29 454 brackets and used an A/C hose assembly from a late 90’s Blazer/Jimmy then had my local Napa store create my hoses. I bought the hose Blazer/Jimmy for $10 and paid Napa around $80 to fabricate the new hoses. I charged the A/C system myself.

I will add another tid-bit of information:
The a/c mounting bracket that is shown has the mounts for an air pump. It should have a casting number of 10129515.
There is also another version without the mounts for the air pump, but everything else is the same. It's casting number is 10118751, and gives a much cleaner look to the engine compartment.

You'll also need a new style fan and water pump since it spins the other direction on a serp set up.

Hey Stroker,

I forgot to ask you…if you do this serpentine swap do you want to sell you v-belt p/s brackets and crank pulley? I want to add p/s to my 72’ C20 beater truck and need a few more parts.

I have had my head under many of GM full size trucks and have never sent that bracket without the air pump mounting sounds like a nice piece.

I wonder if that bracket is actually for a S10 or M/L van (Astro Van) with a 4.3L V6 since under hood clearance is more of an issue on those. Also I don’t believe S10 and M/L Vans used air pumps since the late 80’s. Doesn’t matter even if it is a 4.3 bracket it will still fit a small block.

I found it on a ('92 ~ 94) 1500 series chevy or GMC, dont remember for sure. I can take a digital pic of the bracket
and show everyone.... I actually have both and had planned on
using the airpump bracket until I found the one without, its a
much cleaner look, I HIGHLY recommend it!!! Will try to post the
pic tonight.
