Torque Convertor
My tranny is leaking out of the front seal, and I am going
to replace it. My question is, I think I will be needing to replace my torque convertor because it is the original. What would be a good convertor, and what kind of cost am I looking at? It is my daily driver so I'm not really looking for a stall. (Sure would like one though...) Any help would be greatly appreciated as usual! Thanks

Dan,
Someone may have more info than I, but, Bel-Red Transmission built my T400 with an Allison converter...it is stock stall but a heavy duty unit. Until I seriously change the cam, it does fine and I am happy....but may need stall soon.

I was told of a company called SeaTac Transmission. Ever heard of them Mike?

I have not. I was referred to Bel Red by the guy who does quite a bit of work on my Chevelle and several SIR Vintage racers and Drag Racers. I trust him and so far, Bel Red has done an excellent job even though I have had a few bumps along the way. If your converter is workig fine, then there really shouldn't be any reason to swap it out onless you're looking for a little more RPMs off the line. Converters usually outlast the tranny they are plugged into.
However, if you are running a basicly stock engine, a 1900 or so stall converter is a pretty awsome way to go. In normal stop light to stop light, it feels bone stock, but when you launch it, you'll notice a little bit more than normal. It is low enough that even with 3.07 gears and 28 inch tall tires (like my 275/60 15s) you hit the stall speed at normall in town speeds...45-ish if memory serves. Hope this is of help. |

Examine the neck and tabs of the converter that inserts into the front pump for stress cracks, it's also possible that's the source of your leak. If that area looks good, replace the seal and go for it. Also check the large o-ring area and bolts around the outer edge of the front pump, if this o-ring or bolt/washers gaskets are leaking it will leak out the bottom in the same area as the front pump seal.
