Carrier bearing ?

I had to replace my starter, and while I was under the truck I rolled over and noticed a piece of rubber hanging from my carrier bearing I grabbed the drive shaft and shook it and sure enough the carrier is shot I've not really dealt with the 2 piece before is it hard to change I haven't even had time to mess with it but I'd like to know what I'm in for.btw I was in a gas station parking lot or it would already be fixed

Re: Carrier bearing ?

I replaced mine over the summer. Really straight forward and fairly simple to replace. Ended up doing all new U-joints as well

Re: Carrier bearing ?

I just did mine and it's simple. Like rock mentioned it's a good time to replace the u joints as well.

The carrier is pretty easy to do. Mark everything R&R then take it to the driveline shop to have it ballanced.

Or if you only want to make one trip to the driveline shop they can do the work for you and spot any problems with your shaft that someone who doesn't look at driveshafts 40hrs a week wouldn't notice.

I've built thousands of driveshafts and I won't do driveline work at home, I don't have a $40,000 driveline ballancer at home, driveshafts need to be ballanced after they have been modified. Something as simple as changing a ujoint or carrier bearing will mess with the ballance. The style of carrier bearings in these trucks won't last long with a driveline vibraton. They are so bad that someone has designed a $100 solid carrier bearing to fix the symptoms associated with a driveline vibration. That solid carrier requires another $150 worth of work to install PROPERLY that most people don't do.

Re: Carrier bearing ?

What do you mean that solid bearing needs another 150 worth work?
