New member, new acquisition: all original 72 C10

Hey all --

I just jumped in with both feet and finally picked up a C10, one that I can drag kids and kayaks around in. It's a 72 with 79K original miles, barn-stored since it was last driven in 1996. I bought it about 100 miles away, turned the key once, and drove it home.

I grew up driving Novas with the same drivetrain (350/Turbo 350), so it'll be fun to jog my memory while tinkering. I plan to keep it all original, as is: original paint, original seat, etc. It's white with ochre interior, all in great shape with only minimal cosmetic rust. There are a few issues I need to address: I presume the non-working rear turn signals and brake lights are just in need of a fuse (let's hope), one valve cover gasket looks to need a refresh (I'm sure I'll do both just to be symmetrical), and the emergency brake dashboard indicator is always lit when the truck is running, so I need to figure that out. The brake is disengaged, or at least enough to drive it with no smoke or resistance. Aside from those minor issues, it's ready to roll and have fun with.

It's been awhile since I've driven a classic, so it was a treat to pull into a rest stop and immediately have three folks come over asking about it. I think I missed car people as much as I missed having a car.

I'm a history buff, so I get a special kick out of the paperwork it comes with: original bill of sale, etc. The original purchaser owned it until his death in recent months.

Needless to say, I'm psyched to have the truck and glad to have this forum for advice -- I'll undoubtedly need it!

Nice truck. Someone painted the exterior at some point. It should be ochre as well.

Re: New member, new acquisition: all original 72 C10

The original bill of sale describes it as "white/ochre" with "parchment trim." So this was originally a white/ochre two-tone exterior? If so, I may have to return it to its original state ...

Thanks for the help!

What is the paint code on the SPID? From the description it was probably an ochre truck with a white roof.

The code is 536 - white & ochre.

I actually dig that ochre color a lot, so I wouldn't mind a bit if that's the color it was supposed to be!

Nice truck!
Definitely a repaint. That band that runs along the backside of the cab below the rear window is a tell tail sign that it was a two-tone, that's the separation between the roof and body color.
Can you take a picture of the inside of the glovebox door?

Thanks for the compliment! I'm real happy to have it. And thanks also for the help.

Here's a picture of the inside of the glove box.

Re: New member, new acquisition: all original 72 C10

Very nice! Still looks great and tasteful even though the original paint scheme is gone. I would drive that baby just the way it is

A side note, question, whatever for the forum police….what is the deal with this website where people can’t post pictures the right way? Seems like the majority of the pictures added as an attachment are always turned the wrong way. Seems to be a website problem more than a poster problem. My neck gets sore coming here sometimes

Re: New member, new acquisition: all original 72 C10

Welcome to the board and to the Ochre Club! Great find.

FYI - the brake light isn't related to the emergency break like new vehicles, it indicates an issue within the system itself. You can do a search for more info but I'm guessing one of the more knowledgeable members will chime in to help.

We've stared an Upstate SC GM Trucks Club where we get together for lunch once and month to talk trucks. Link to the Facebook page is in my signature. Hopefully we'll get to see you and your truck in person at some point.

Good luck & enjoy! - Matt

The brake light on means either the front or rear brakes are not working. The switch for the light is in the proportioning valve below the master cylinder. You will see a small light brown wire connected to it. You need to address that problem as soon as possible.

Larry, I don't think that problem has anything to do with the web site. A lot of people are using phones instead of regular cameras to take and post pictures nowdays and it has something to do with how some phones handle that function. There are a few threads about it on here.
