First test ride for Big Bertha was towing 11K camper. This pic is from the night before the first camping trip. I got the plates on Thursday, when pic was taken, and left for camping the next day. Not quite finished at that point, windows wired to a motorcycle battery we passed around the truck from window to window, ac not working, wife burnt her bare feet on the dog house cover....but we were on the road and made it with no issues.

First day I owned it: on a trailer and it went straight into the shop for a full tear down.
First time it moved under its own power: back on a trailer and up to a buddy's place to be torn down again for body work and paint.

First time completed and on the road: Hopefully this weekend .... and then probably to a gas station

After the long 11 yr build I set out on my birthday for the maiden voyage. I went to my painters shop to show him the (somewhat) finished product. I then went and visited some old neighbors where I lived where the majority of the work was done.

I still remember that day like it was yesterday..It was a good day.

Marc, thanks for including pics of your truck. It really caught my eye as your avatar because there's a guy in the next town over that has an AD truck on an S10 frame which has just about the same stance as yours and also looks like the same guy painted it. May not be exactly the same colors, but you'd have to have the trucks parked side by side to notice the difference.
Looking at your 'Burb build, my floors aren't quite as bad as yours, somebody pop rivited sheet metal over the worst of it. We decided to get it running and drive it for a season or two before I strip it down and do the metal work correctly.

The first place I drove it was to get an inspection sticker and then the 25 miles home. I don't count the 500 yards the day I got it. As it had no brakes and was running on a boat gas tank. If you can call spitting, sputtering, and smoking running.

I drove about 40-miles on twisty, lonely, two-lane rural roads in North Missouri.
Cold, cloudy fall day. The heater and CD player worked great.
Got less than three miles from the Iowa state line, where a gas station was, and I ran out of gas.
Got chilly waiting for a buddy to bring me a few gallons. I had to jump a fence to get behind a barn to pee.

1973 - drove home from the guy's house where I bought it. Best $235.00 I ever spent.
And have been driving it most of the time since. Except for the 4 years to rebuild it and ......

In 1973 after paying 75.00 for it I drove it home and then to work a couple of days later after I transferred it into my name and bought tags. I drove it way work almost every y on swing shift after working on it for four or five hours in the morning straightening and sanding the body.
A week before the 1973 Street Rod Nationals a buddy "Paul Charles" painted iZ28t 72 Monte Carlo Placer gold in his home garage and a club member Bobby Russel did a great tan roll and pleat seat and cover for the bed out of brown vinyl top material and after thowing a set of used tires on the 67 Z28 Camaro rally wheels I got from a coworker at Ryder Truck Rental in Waco for 25.00 were off from McGregor Tx to Tulsa ok. A paint plugged carb and fuel filter, dead coil and fried tail shaft in the trans later we made it to Tulsa only 6 hours late. Several days of 1973 car freak overload and we headed home on Sunday and had an uneventful trip home except my wife got the bottoms of her feet sunburned because she had laid down in the seat using my leg for a pillow and sticking her feet out the window as we headed south.

After nearly 3 years in the making, I drove her down our driveway, across the street, down the neighbor's driveway and back to our place. About 3/4 mile in all. Forgot to tighten down the distributor bolt while tuning it, so every 150ft or so I had to get out and readjust timing to keep her running. Battery got pretty tired towards the end of the "trip" from all the restarts and no time for the alternator to do its job, but I was grinning from ear to ear. Now I just need to "finish it" so I can take a longer cruise!

My first official trip was over to the cemetary where my Pop is. He passed away before I was able to finish it and I always told him he would be on the first ride. That was as close to giving him the first ride as I could get. He would always ask what I was up to and my response was "working on the truck". I sure miss him.

My first drive was around my 5 acres to check everything out, then I parked next to "old rusty" for these shots. Then it was down the highway about 55 mph with no windshield, no sun glasses, eyes tearing like crazy, but I was happy as hell...Jim

Had 6 miles on it when I left for a show at Ocean City Md. just over 200 miles down the road.
Took me 14 months from start to finish. Pretty quick build and no issues.
Since then I m on my 3rd motor , 2nd tranny and switched to F.I.

The first place I drove mine anything worthy wise, was exactly a week after I built my 406 sbc, new 700r4, and new 10 bolt. 460 miles to St. Paul for btt50's. No issues minus a gas tank that wasn't vented enough.
