Rack & pinion potential alternative

Today while servicing an 02 Nissan Pathfinder I noticed the odd angle the input to the steering rack was at,kinda facing toward the radiator.I followed the shaft,it lead to a right angled gearbox with it's input going to the steering column, kind of an odd looking thing, but the steering shaft was kept well away from the engine due to it's angle to get to the gearbox.ANYHOW,I thought, guys are always looking for a way to put rack & pinion into their builds, this style offers LOTS of clearance getting past the exhaust manifolds, motor mounts etc.Just for laughs I measured the total width tie rod grease nipple to grease nipple is 54 inches. For what it's worth. The 2nd pic is from behind the rad pointing down, sorry it's crappy, kinda crowded in there.Name: SAM_0651.jpg
