Frame holes are elongated where shocks connect
Hey guys.
I am guessing my 68 was used for off roading in the past. The shock holes in the frame are now oval. I am planning on welding them back to round. I am guessing I should weld from the top down???? The off roading caused the shocks to jam upwards and push the holes upwards??? Any suggestions on how to fix this to make them round again would really held. I'm a total noob. Thanks Picture is sideways, so turn your heads left. |

And also, there are hairline cracks going outward here, so this frame was definitely under some serious stress here.

Re: Frame holes are elongated where shocks connect
That is very common in all of these trucks, because the mounts are "single shear".
I have fixed dozens of them with various methods. This includes a simple weld to the oblong edge for minor wear and going as far as welding thick washers in place inside the frame. This gives some back-up for any cracks that may have developed too.

Do you have an idea as to which edge is the "oblong edge"? The top or bottome of the hole? Or does it even matter?

As a bad as that is, I wouldn't worry about it. I would go for somewhat centered and call it good. It's not a precision thing anyway.

Re: Frame holes are elongated where shocks connect
I would find a thick washer, weld it in then get CPP's shock mount support tabs:

Re: Frame holes are elongated where shocks connect
CPP brackets work great. Have installed them on two trucks.
