Cam Shaft Expansion Plug Replacement in Truck
Hi guys, I have my transmission pulled out of my truck right now to replace my rear main seal. I have the rear seal, galley plugs and both coolant expansion plugs replaced already. The only thing I did not replace was the expansion plug over the cam shaft. Has anyone replaced this with the camshaft installed in the engine? Does it matter? I want to get everything done so I do not have to drop the transmission again as it is a huge pain!
Thanks! |

Re: Cam Shaft Expansion Plug Replacement in Truck
I have never heard of anyone ever having a problem with that plug. They are usually only removed when replacing cam bearings. It gets in the way of driving out the last one.
They don't corrode like core plugs because they get oil from the inside and there is no wear on them, because the cam makes no contact.

I figured that would be the case but I just wanted to make sure as I hate dropping the transmission over and over.
Thanks! |

Why pull the tranny to change the rear main?
One piece or two piece seal? |

Re: Cam Shaft Expansion Plug Replacement in Truck
Mine is an 86 so it is a 1 piece rear seal. That is why I have to drop the trans to get the seal out.
