First trip
Took the truck on a 254 mile round trip today up to NC to see my parents. Truck ran great! I ran 100MPH a couple of times to see how it would do and it did fine. The water temp stayed right around 190 the whole way. I ran 75-80 most of the time. Filled up before I left and used a little over a 1/4 tank.
This is all the gas it used. heck if I would run 55MPH it wouldn't have used this much!

Re: First trip
Truck ran great. Nope didn't blow it up! March 20 it will head to Myrtle Beach SC for the big car show. That's a 5hr drive each way.
Got appointment Thursday for the transmission. Taking it to the local guy to do a fluid change and check the thing out for the temp reading.

Re: First trip
That's awesome Andy, what size gas tank you using? I am using the 87 style tank and I don't think mine is reading right. I figured each line in the gauge cluster is 2 gallons but it seam to drop faster than it should and then when I fill up it takes less than I thought it would meaning there is more gas in the tank than I figured.

Nice, do you have a picture of it? Was it easy to install? I hate having the small gas tank!

Re: First trip
Nope no pictures never been asked for any before. I installed this tank in the front part of the long bed like a extra tank. It's not in the frame rails under the bed.

Re: First trip
So that would equal about 16 or so gallons and a 254 mile trip= 16+/-MPG

Re: First trip
glad it is running good Andy. Is the torque converter lock up and unlock all working like it should? Since your using a GPS speedo it should all be good.

Re: First trip
Keep in mind, on almost all of the older cars I've driven the fuel needle doesn't drop at all for the first 50 miles or so then it starts diving real fast... Might be closer to 20 gallons used up already. Fill it up and let us know! My 6.0 is still getting 14 with 3.73s and 65 mph driving. I know its on the low side of what it should be, but this weather is killing all of my free time to get it figured out.

Re: First trip
Yes the torque converter is locking in and out just fine. Look at the speed and RPM's. It's running about 3 to 4 hundred less than what the 700 r4 ran.
The gas gauge is less than 2 years old. It's not the old sendor either.gas milage isn't really a big concern guy's as long as it perfoms well. I'm going to try my best to drive it at a normal speed going to the beach and see what it does but dang it's hard to keep my foot out of it!

Re: First trip
Call the local trans shop this morning. Taking it Thursday to have the fluid changed and filters cleaned and check the temp senor wiring. Fix the gasket leak also.

Well if I request to see pics of your gas tank that would make two. I think two request in one post is worthy of a pic! I'm extremely curious because I'm searching for a tank that is bigger than the blazer tanks that will work in my '70 with tbi. |

Re: First trip
Thanks,
It's a factory cluster that I installed speed hut guages in.I'm planning to redo it sometime with a better face. I think I'm going to buy the aluminium one maybe and have the holes drilled for the gauges.

Re: First trip
As you requested! Pictures of my Redneck gas tank. Before anyone makes any comments about it. The tank is strapped just like it would be under the truck maybe better. I even doubled the straps. It has been this way since 1995. It has never given me any trouble. I don't haul a lot in the truck so it was OK to take up the room up front under the cover.

Re: First trip
That'll get her done. I didn't realize you had a bed cover. I was wondering how you routed your filler. Man I would love to have a 40 gal tank! I'm sure I would have a heart attack and have to get financial aid to top that sucker off. But that would be better than having to stop and get gas every 4days....
Thanks for sharing! |

Re: First trip
Most times I only run a 1/2 tank down and fill up. That's 20 gallons and don't worry about it. I haven't done that since the motor install trying to get a feel for the milage. Last tank I did was 15.8 MPG which was mostly interstate driving. I was hoping for better milage than that but at 75-80 MPH with 2 short 100 MPH runs I guess that ant to bad for a 5hr round trip to my parents house and back. It's hard to drive it at the legal speed for a whole 1/2 tank are even a full tank to see what it will do.

Re: First trip
That isn't too bad of gas mileage for a 6.0 with 411 gears.
